Principals Report Week 5 Term 1
Dear Parents and Carers,
It is hard to believe that we are approaching the halfway mark of Term 1! This time has gone so quickly but we are very grateful for the start to the year we have had with face-to-face teaching at Rosary.
This week we keep the people of Queensland and New South Wales in our prayers and thoughts as they continue to battle the unfolding flood crisis.
We also keep the innocent people of Ukraine, Russia and neighbouring regions caught up in the current conflict in their region in our prayers and thoughts. We hope that a resolution can be reached and peace can be reinstated as soon as possible.
Period of Lent Begins
Today is Ash Wednesday. Each class held a special liturgy to learn about the significance of the day/time in the lives of Christians. The ashes were distributed in a COVID safe way of being sprinkled on the heads/hair of each individual.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Church season of Lent. The distribution of the ashes is an expression of our faith and humility. Lent prepares us for the season of Easter, the most important time in the Church’s calendar. We are called to live justly and act with compassion, love and hope. During Lent it is common for people to fast and give up some of things we call comforts. It is also appropriate, and more meaningful for children, to try to do things for others and support others who are in need. Children can be encouraged to do small things that may be really appreciated by others and in this way they grow closer to God.
Learning Snapshot
Recently I was able to read a number of stories written by Year 1 Hague students. They were very proud of their work and I was able to present some of the students with a Principal’s Award. I was also able to observe some of their tower constructions made in groups during Science.
Here are some of the Year 1 The Hague students:
Indonesian Studies News
Our Indonesian teacher Mrs Chilver will continue on sick leave for the remainder of the term. I spoke to her recently and she is not well enough to return to her full teaching load yet. Mrs Chilver wanted me to pass on her thoughts to all of the students and the school community. She misses us all!
From next week, Week 6, we will be able to resume Indonesian lessons for students in Kinder, Year 1, Year 2, Year 5 and Year 6 as we have been fortunate to secure the services of another Indonesian teacher on a temporary basis. These lessons will continue until the end of this term when a decision will be made about Term 2.
Advance Notice: Pupil Free Days in 2022
Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn has again implemented two days as pupil free days in 2022, for the purpose of targeted CATALYST curriculum professional learning days for staff only.
These pupil free days fall on the first days of both Term 2 and Term 3 this year:
- Tuesday 26 April (following the ANZAC day holiday)
- Monday 18 July
On these days staff meet and undertake specialised instruction and coaching provided by educational consultants appointed by Catholic Education. The CATALYST program has bold goals for every school in our archdiocese, with targeted theory, pedagogy, assessment and feedback aimed to improve the teaching in every classroom and the learning outcomes for each student. The CATALYST initiative supports Rosary School achieving its own strategic goals.
There may be care available at our OSHClub on these two pupil days, but this would need to be confirmed directly with our Director.
Morning Drop Off - Parents to Refrain from Entering the QUAD area before school.
Now that students have settled in well to the school year we will revert back to our previous COVID safe morning drop off arrangements. We now ask that parents and carers do not enter the school QUAD area before school in the mornings. Please drop your children off in the drive through lane or leave them at the school gates if you are walking them in.
If COVID restrictions ease, the school will resume outside morning assemblies and gatherings in the QUAD area. Parents and carers will hopefully be allowed to gather at these times and mingle, meet teachers and other parents as well listen to our morning news and announcements. This will all be communicated to the school by ACT Government and Catholic Education as part of their COVID safe guidelines.
You are also reminded that students should move into the QUAD area once they arrive at school and when their parents or carers drop them off. Students should not leave the QUAD area once they arrive as this is the only area staff supervise in the mornings.
As our afternoon pick up arrangements involve parents parking and collecting students, you are still permitted to enter the QUAD area at 3.00pm and 3.10pm respectively. Please continue to wear a mask to enhance the safety of our community members. It is important at this time that students locate their parents or carers safely before going home.
Thank you for your support with our arrangements.
This Friday I look forward to presenting the Week 5 BEST AWARDS as well as our weekly VERITAS awards.
All the best for the coming week. God bless
Greg Walker

Ash Wednesday
Fr Mannes delivered blessed Ashes to school today for Ash Wednesday. The students participated in liturgies in class to pray and to think of others, especially during the season of Lent. The ashes are a reminder for us to turn away from our bad choices and turn towards God.
Project Compassion
Today marks the start of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allows Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.
The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is ‘For All Future Generations’ and reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues. We are encouraged to put our compassion into action this Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion.
Each classroom will have a Project Compassion box for donations. Alternatively, you can donate online via the Caritas Australia website at: lent.caritas.org.au All donations will be greatly appreciated.
Peace and best wishes

Protective Behaviours – Networks
Dear Parents,
As part of the Protective Behaviours program, students will be learning about personal networks.
A network is a group of adults, chosen by the child, who can provide them with support, assistance and, if necessary, protection. The most important factor when discussing safety with your child is keeping the communication channels open, letting your child know they can talk with you about anything. It is also vital that you help your child identify a ‘safety network’ of trusted adults with whom they can talk.
Discussing an ‘emergency network’ is also important, identifying who your child could go to if they felt unsafe in a place where their usual network of people may not be available. This may be someone who works in a shop, someone in a uniform or a mum with small children. It can be helpful to do a ‘practice run’ with your child and coach her or him on what to say to the emergency network person if they are lost.
It is important to understand that as children grow older, the situations in which they become involved will change, but their right to feel safe will never change. By using ‘teachable moments’ in your everyday lives and planned activities, children understand that they have the right to feel safe at all times.
What can I do?
- Talk with your child about other adults in their lives. Who do they like talking with? Who could they talk with if they needed help?
- It is best if the child can identify an adult to talk with in all the different places they spend time, e.g. school, sports, dance class, church.
Kind regards,
Julie Godfrey

Whole Day Absences - please submit via Parent Portal
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
Clothing Pool Open during School Hours
The Rosary Clothing Pool is open to families to purchase second hand uniform items for $5 per piece. Please note that currently only one family is allowed in the room at any one time and hand sanitisation is required upon entry and exit. A key is available from the front office to access the room during school hours for your convenience.
All new uniform items can be purchased from Personally Yours. They are located at 218 Gladstone St, Fyshwick ACT 2609 and can be contacted on 6280 4166.
The school counsellor, Hilde de Raadt-Abma, is available every Thursday and Friday.
You can refer your child for counselling by filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss with Hilde.
Hilda can be contacted via the school or email (hilde.deraadt@catholiccare.cg.org.au) on Thursdays and Fridays.
School Photos will take place on Tuesday 15th March 2022.
All students are to come in full school uniform (not sports) on the day.
If you wish to place an order for school photos, please do so online. See below flyer for details. A physical copy of the flyer has gone home with the eldest student in each family today.
Sibling photos MUST be ordered before the photo day. All other photos can be ordered at any time.
There has been a major change to the Library lesson timetable for the second part of this term. This change of day will impact students knowing when to bring their books for returning! Please note below:
Tuesday- year 1, year 3 and 2 Barcelona
Wednesday- year 5, year 6 and 2 Osaka
Thank you very much to Lachlan Neighbour in year 5 Washington, who kindly donated bags of books with complete sets of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and other series. Thank you for your generosity!
As we start to catalogue the storm damage replacement books, we will be in desperate need of 'book covering' parents/grandparents who would be willing to take a bag of books home to cover for us. We will have nearly $8000 worth of novels in need of covering...if you would like to help us, please contact the front office and I'll return your call. I'm also happy to give anyone a 'lesson' if that helps!!!
Thank you in anticipation, Sandy and Jodie
