Principals Report Week 2 Term 2
Dear Parents and Carers
Mother’s Day this Sunday
On behalf of our school community I wish all of our mother’s, grandmother's and other significant people in the lives of our children and families a very special Mothers’ Day this Sunday. You play a vital role in families and are much-loved!
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Extra Pupil Free Days Granted This Term For ACT Catholic and Government Schools
Please see this letter below from the Director of Catholic Education
Dear Parents and Carers
I have authorised two extra pupil free days in Term 2 for all schools in the Archdiocese of Canberra Goulburn to support teachers who have been carrying extra teaching loads due to the COVID-related staff absences.
Like many other school systems, in Term 1 our schools had significant staff absences. Casual teachers were in short supply so teachers and principals covered classes of absent teachers. They went without their usual allocated release from day-to-day teaching and planning, professional learning and administration.
Despite these challenges, our staff sought to maintain the highest quality of teaching, learning and pastoral care of students.
I have asked each school to engage with their parent and carer communities to give you timely notice of these pupil free days. Included below are further details from your Principal.
Ross Fox
Director, Catholic Education
Archdiocese of Canberra Goulburn
Rosary Pupil Free Days Information
As mentioned by Mr Fox, these extra two days are provided to support staff with the additional workload required in school at the moment with COVID restrictions, staff shortages, missed administration time and the added stress of covering classes for colleagues and undertaking extra duties etc. I see this as a very positive and tangible step by our educational authorities to support their staff.
We all want to be able to keep schools open for students face-to-face and I know the Rosary School community appreciates the ongoing work our staff do in educating and supporting our students.
Each school is able to choose when they will take their extra 2 pupil free days this term depending on the needs and requirements of their school. Rosary has decided to take their two days on:
- Monday 16 May (Start of Week 4) and
- Friday 10 June (End of Week 7) - this date adjoins the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, offering a chance for families to have a 4 day break if possible.
To put these days in context for you, school staff are required to work full work days on site as normal on these days and will undertake approved work and tasks related to their teaching and roles in the school. The days have been spread out about a month apart to support staff wellbeing and allow them to undertake different tasks required at certain times of the term.
I wanted to provide parents with as much notice as I could about the dates for these extra pupil free days. I will liaise with OSHClub and let you know if they would be able to offer a holiday day program on these two dates.
I also want to thank you in advance for your support and understanding with initiatives like this that are designed to support school staff. It has been a challenging couple of years for everyone and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with you.
Winter Uniforms Required by Week 3 (next week)
You are reminded that all students need to wear full winter uniform from the start of Week 3 this term (next week). We have had a two week phase in period to accommodate the warmer weather but the cold weather is here now. The winter uniform is designed to keep the students warm. As a COVID safety measure we will need to continue to open doors and windows to increase ventilation so it is important that students are comfortable inside and outside the classroom.
Please note, the Rosary winter uniform includes:
- Both boys and girls wear ties.
- Boys are also required to wear long pants, even though some prefer to wear shorts.
- Girls wear long pants, long sleeve shirts with Peter Pan collar and tie.
- Winter sports uniform on two days
Cross Country Carnival
Yesterday we held our school cross country carnival and events. The races were held round the school oval and courts area. Students in each age group ran a distance specific to their age/ability. The long distance running events can be challenging but the students ran with great enthusiasm and determination! A huge thank you to Mrs Godfrey who organised the carnival and Miss Webb who also assisted with the event.
Some of the older students that ran well in their event and finished in a place may go on to represent Rosary and the North Gungahlin District schools carnival. This regional event is scheduled to be held on Friday 3 June. You will be notified next week if your child is selected for this event. School ribbons for our place getters will also be distributed at an assembly in the near future. Well done to everyone on a successful event.
Family Baby News
Congratulations to Lacey Poore and Andrew Bingley on the recent safe arrival of a new son named Alby. Ayla McCann (5 Washington) and her brother Henry Bingley (1 Hague) are also very excited about their new baby brother! Alby is about a month old now. I hope the family continues to enjoy this very special time.
Term 2 BEST AWARDS
Our focus for the Term 2 BEST awards is EXPLORE. The awards will be given out in Weeks 2,4,6,8 and 10 this term, in addition to our weekly Veritas awards. We are teaching students to develop a deep understanding of their learning and an acquisition of knowledge, content and skills. Through explicit teaching students are able to retain knowledge, recall key content and processes which then allow them to explore their learning in new and exciting ways. We are seeking to develop students that wonder and inquire about learning and the world in which they live.
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead. God Bless.

Super exciting to be able to resume some normality with lunchtime visits albeit with student numbers limited. Each day we see either infants or primary students come in for drawing club, chess games, research time and/or quiet time reading books of their choice! Our Library is fast becoming the ‘go to place’ to hang out again!!
Thank you so much to the Tansley Family for their kind donation of near new books for our collection! We are very grateful. Also, we have had families busily covering our new books and we would like to thank them for their time and expertise. This replacement process will continue this term, we are very thankful for our volunteers.

Ride or Walk to School Day - Friday May 6th 2022
FRIDAY 6 MAY
This year Rosary will continue to participate in the ACT Government’s Ride or Walk to School program. The program suggests that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking or riding as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking or riding all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking or riding more by:
- Walking or riding with them the whole way to school
- If they get the bus, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
- If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
Regular exercise like walking and riding with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes, it also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.
Please join us on Friday 6 May by using your legs or wheels to get to school. Remember that helmets must be worn if your child is cycling or riding a scooter.
Some of the staff will be at the Watson shops ready for an 8:30am departure. We hope to see many children and parents arriving at school without their car!

Coordinator
The school counsellor, Hilde de Raadt-Abma, is available every Wednesday and Thursday.
You can refer your child for counselling by filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss with Hilde.
Hilda can be contacted via the school or email (hilde.deraadt@catholiccare.cg.org.au) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
