Principals Report Week 5 Term 2
Dear Parents and Carers
Reconciliation Week
Today Miss Blom (our Aboriginal Contact Teacher) and students from various year levels presented a Reconciliation Day assembly for the students in the school. It was a respectful and informative assembly which embraced the 2022 theme of ‘MAKE CHANGE - BE BRAVE’. Students reminded us of the rich traditions and ongoing culture of the first Australians, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It was empowering to hear the students read out their own reflections on how we call all make a difference in the actions and decisions we make every day.
The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
Last year Reconciliation Australia encouraged all Australians to take action; not just in National Reconciliation Week but every week of the year.
We saw unprecedented response to our suggested actions for everyday and for braver action.
This year we are asking everyone to make change beginning with brave actions in their daily lives – where they live, work, play and socialise.
National Reconciliation Week—27 May to 3 June—is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Tell Them From Me Survey - Link to be provided
The link for parents and carers to complete this annual feedback survey will be sent via COMPASS to you directly rather than shared through the school newsletter.
A reminder again that separate 2022 Tell Them From Me surveys will be available to parents, staff and students (Years 4-6) in the next 3 weeks. The same survey is distributed to members of all Catholic Schools in our archdiocese, providing information to make Rosary an even better school and our system overall. The survey window is open from:
Monday 23 May until Friday 10 June (Term 2, Week 8).
I encourage all parents and carers to complete the survey and share your thoughts on:
- The things you are proud of at Rosary School and the things we are doing well.
- The things we could do better or improve at Rosary School.
There are a number of questions across a broad range of schooling, education, community and well being domains. As the new principal at Rosary in 2022 I am really interested in your thoughts, insights and ideas so that the feedback can help shape the school now and into the future.
Students in Years 4-6 will be invited to participate in the survey but you also have the option for your child to opt out from completing the survey.
2023 Kindergarten Enrolments
The official 2023 Catholic Schools Enrolment Period ends tomorrow Friday 27 May. I remind parents and carers enrolling students for Kindergarten 2023, including those with siblings already at the school, to lodge their enrolment online by tomorrow if possible. Sibling enrolments are really important to know, as well as attracting new families and students to Rosary.
We have had some successful open sessions for prospective parents and children to visit the school. However, we are still seeking more Kindergarten enrolments so we have added some additional times the school is open for tours and discussions about what Rosary School offers.
Our new sessions:
Open Afternoon - 3.30pm - 4.30pm Wednesday 1 June
Open Morning: 9.00am - 11.00am Tuesday 7 June
It is lovely to continue to showcase Rosary School to members of the community. Families are welcome to visit the school or contact us if you wish to enrol your child in any year level from Kindergarten to Year 6 in 2022 or 2023.
For more information, please contact the school office on 62480010 or email us at office.rosaryps@cg.catholic.edu.au
Enrolment details and forms can also be found on our website at www.rosary.act.edu.au
Matt Giteau Cup - Rugby Union Gala Day
On Tuesday this week we had two teams participate in the Matt Giteau Cup. One team participated in the Year 3/4 division and one team in the Year 5/6 division. I was fortunate to be able to watch both teams play a game or two. They all played really well and enjoyed the day. The Year 3/4 team were undefeated in their round matches and made the final, which actually ended in a draw! Thank you to our coaches and supporters that attended the day and to Mrs Mogan for supervising the students and Mrs Godfrey for entering our teams in the event.
Working with Vulnerable People Cards - Parents/Carers Reminded to Have a Current Card
You are reminded that school events are starting to happen again (which is great news) and parents and carers may be able to assist with these events or attend. Your involvement in school events is dependent on the COVID restrictions/plan at the time.
You are reminded that you do need a current Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) Card to be able to attend excursions, help with fundraising events and assist in the classroom or other areas of the school. Please check to see if your card is valid or if it has expired.
If applicable, please apply for a new card or renew your card if you intend to volunteer to assist with school events and working with children as the year progresses. Please also contact the school and provide a copy of your card and details for reference. You need to have your card on you when you are actually volunteering at school or at an event.
We hope to see more parents involved in school as the year unfolds.
KidsLit Quiz Challenge at Merici College
Please read the summary of the KidsLit Challenge in this newsletter. It was a very entertaining and successful event for the students involved. Thank you to Mr Evans and Mrs Vincent for entering our teams in the challenge and for preparing the students for the types of literature themes and potential questions they may be asked.
I wish you all well for the week ahead.
God Bless

Rosary Community Council Open Meeting - Wednesday 1st June 7.00pm School LIbrary
Well maybe not all but we look forward to seeing many of you.
Do you know what your Rosary Community Council is responsible for?
Do you know what it discussed and planned at these meetings?
Our OPEN meeting will be held on Wednesday 1 June at 7:00pm in the school library. We look forward to meeting you there.
Please respond for numbers and catering purposes via the Council email address: rosarycouncil@gmail.com
This Wednesday, the 25th of May, sixteen students from Years 4, 5 and 6 competed in the Canberra heat of the Kid's Lit Quiz. The Lit Quiz is a global contest that is run each year for children between the ages of 10 and 14 that celebrates the 'sport of reading'. Students are quizzed on a range of subjects about different books and authors with questions ranging from 'What fearsome creature asked people riddles?' (The Sphinx) to 'What was the famous Australian book that featured the Woolcot children?' (Seven Little Australians).
We were very lucky this year as we are one of only a few countries to be able to hold face to face contests. The students visited Merici College to compete against more than 30 other teams from primary and high schools!
I am proud to report that the teams from Rosary did an excellent job! For all of our students, it was their first time competing, and many of the teams we were competing against were made up of high schoolers! Despite the fact that many of the students there had years more experience our teams did very well, with one winning a prize for the top score in the category of 'How Many?' and several winning cash prizes for the quickest answer! One of our teams placed 5th overall, and second in the Primary category!
Rosary has made a strong start at the Kid's Lit Quiz this year, and we hope to build on our success into the future! If your child is in Year 4 or 5 they should consider coming along to see what the Lit Quiz is all about, or talk to Mr Evans for some more information!
Library lunchtime Clubs
Library lunchtime clubs have started back this week with years K-2 visiting last Monday for drawing club. Students looked at the illustrative style of Aaron Blabey’s ‘Bad Guys’ series of books! Year six Library Monitors create and run the lesson for our clients!
National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual event in Australia currently in its 22nd year! Over a million students stop and read the recommended book at the same time. Rosary always participates but because of covid, we chose to have a class-by-class approach instead of the K-2 students all descending to the Library for a group reading. It is a unique concept with a beautiful story this year about of how all families are different and are a "celebration of life, belonging, diversity and collective strength" (Josh Pyke- author).

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea @ Rosary
The Rosary staff held a Greatest Morning Tea last week raising $582 for the Cancer Council.
We felt strongly that it was timely for us, as a staff, to gather together and remember those who need specialist medical care and contribute in a financial way.
We are hoping to make this an annual school event for the staff!
Well done everyone!
On Tuesday, some children from Rosary from Years 3-6 participated in the Matt Giteau Rugby cup. The carnival was held in glorious sunshine at Southwell Park and was run by the Brumbies Rugby Union Club. Rosary fielded two teams, one 3/4 team and one 5/6 team. The 5/6 team had a very strong and experienced line-up. They won one of their 4 games, which were all played against some extremely talented competition. They played great football and everyone contributed with very sound skills and excellent teamwork. The 3/4 team won all their games and made it to the Grand Final. The 5/6 team gave them a rousing guard of honour through to take the field. In the end, the Grand Final score was a draw, 3-3. It was very exciting play and the crowd was enthralled by the standard of the competition. Well done to all the boys who participated in the gala day. I’m sure they’re all looking forward to playing again soon!!
Thanks so much to John Cullen and Adam Pyne for coaching the two teams so magnificently, and for all the parents and grandparents who came along to show their support.
