Principals Report Week 10 Term 2
Dear Parents and Carers
Winter Holiday Break
I hope that all families can enjoy the upcoming winter school holiday break and have some downtime without the pressures of school.
Thank you again for your support and for everything you do to help your child or children attend school. Although there have been a number of shorter weeks this term it has been good to have the students attend school in person for a full semester in 2022. It is great to see them enjoying school and becoming more involved in numerous events that are back on the calendar.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to the parents and carers that were able to attend a meeting via TEAMS in the last week. I hope that these conversations were helpful in discussing your child’s achievements to date and for planning for further success in Terms 3 and 4.
Athletics Carnival
We look forward to our annual athletics carnival tomorrow at Dickson Playing Fields. The school staff have been planning for the day for a while and with the help of parents and carers and Majura Little Athletics Club things are on track! Pardon the pun. Thank you to our Sports Coordinator, Mrs Julie Godfrey, and the carnival committee for planning for the day.
Parents and carers are welcome to attend and we look forward to seeing people in person. Fingers crossed the weather holds for us to get through all of the events planned. Some of the events the students in Years 2 - 6 participate in align with the events to be held at the regional representative carnival next term. The main thing is that students have fun and do their best so the day is planned in a round-robin format to keep everyone warm and moving around.
These are the school sports house names and colours so you are aware:
- Mawson House (Blue)
- Chisholm House (Green)
- Freeman House (Red)
- Barton House (Gold)
Students are to wear their sports uniform but may wear a t-shirt or hair ribbons etc representing their house colour. Our canteen manager, Melissa, is running a canteen with snacks and drinks on the day at Dickson - Thank you Melissa! Please remember to bring some recess and lunch to get you through - and a water bottle to refill.
A warm coat and a hat and sunscreen are essentials too!
Freeman House won the 2022 Cross Country so time will tell if another ‘house’ can take out tomorrows athletics carnival.
Chess Competition
Last week we had 24 students participate in the Chess Competition held at Gold Creek School. Well done to all students selected to play. There was healthy competition between each player and the schools present. The games became more challenging as the winners of each game progressed to play other winners. This ensured that games level out during the day and then some chess champions can be crowned. Thank you to Mrs Sandy Vincent for organising for Rosary to participate and for her continued commitment to supporting Chess in the school.
Aboriginal Cultural Day
On Tuesday this week Rosary held an Aboriginal Cultural Day. Two Aboriginal men, Fred and Chaydin, led the students through a number of workshops and artefact discussions during the day. In the afternoon the whole school attended a performance based on dance, music and drama. A number of students were chosen to participate alongside Fred and Chaydin. Thank you to Miss Blom, our Aboriginal Contact Teacher, for organising the day. This day was a good lead in to NAIDOC Week starting soon and being celebrated in schools in July.

COVID restrictions continue in ACT Schools
Principals have been informed that the current COVID Safe Roadmap in place in ACT schools will remain the same for Term 3 as it has been in Term 2.
The roadmap allows for a couple of changes to our practice in Term 3 and we are ready for this at Rosary.
- Teachers may request for parent helpers in their classrooms to assist with learning or tasks. This is a welcome step so students and teachers can be supported. Our focus is on improving learning outcomes so you are most welcome to consider volunteering. You need to have a current WWV card and be healthy/well to help in the classrooms. Your teacher may be in contact with you soon, particularly in Kindergarten to Year 2.
- We are returning to our normal 3.10pm School Day Finish Time for all students. The earlier alphabetical pick up at the time of 3.00pm that we started due to COVID to reduce gathering numbers will no longer be necessary. Again, we just ask adults to social distance and take the relevant precautions in the QUAD.
- Unfortunately parents are still unable to attend class assemblies in the school hall. Outdoor events and events held in the church may be attended by parents.
If and when the ACT Schools’ Roadmap changes we will look to consider easing other restrictions.
My Long Service Leave
I will be away on two weeks Long Service Leave for Week 1 and Week 2 of Term 3. Mr John O’Brien will be Acting Principal and Mrs Liz Higgins Acting Assistant Principal. If you have any queries I am sure they will be able to assist you in my absence.
I wish you all the best for the upcoming school holiday break and the start to Term 3.
God Bless
Greg Walker

ACT Hockey Success - Jed Perks Year 5 Panama
Jed Perks is a year 5 student at Rosary. This weekend, he will represent the ACT as a member of the Under 11 Boys Team in the Michael York Cup at Tamworth in New South Wales. Jed also represented the ACT in Under 11 Boys last year. Last year, the ACT Under 11 Boys won the competition for the first time. Jed plays in the specialist position of Goalkeeper.
Jed has also been selected as Shadow Goalkeeper in the ACT Under 12 Schoolboys team, and will attend the National Championships in Canberra in August.
ACT Junior Chess League North Canberra/Gunghalin Competition
Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending the ACT Junior Chess League North Canberra/Gunghalin competition in Nicholls with 22 of our students. It was also a treat to see a team come all the way from St Mary’s PS in Young, NSW.
Our students played their seven games with skill and friendliness. Our Chess Club coaches were also in attendance and provided support and guidance during the day. Mr Walker popped in and was very impressed at the behaviour and goodwill our students displayed. Special mention to Andrew Pham who won five of his seven games against VERY strong players this year!

Clothing Pool Open during School Hours
The Rosary Clothing Pool is open to families to purchase second hand uniform items for $5 per piece. Please note that currently only one family is allowed in the room at any one time and hand sanitisation is required upon entry and exit. A key is available from the front office to access the room during school hours for your convenience.
All new uniform items can be purchased from Personally Yours. They are located at 218 Gladstone St, Fyshwick ACT 2609 and can be contacted on 6280 4166.
The school counsellor, Hilde de Raadt-Abma, is available every Wednesday and Thursday.
You can refer your child for counselling by filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss with Hilde.
Hilde can be contacted via the school or email (hilde.deraadt@catholiccare.cg.org.au) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Whole Day Absences - please submit via Parent Portal
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
