Principals Report Week 3 Term 3
Dear Parents and Carers,
My Leave
I did want to share with you that I enjoyed my recent two weeks of long service leave to start this term. I was able to take a driving holiday and travel to the red centre and much of outback Australia in SA, NT, QLD and NSW. It was an amazing trip with the highlight being the time spent at Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. This is an amazing place with so much to see, do and learn. I was also able to visit the School of the Air in Alice Springs which has a current enrolment of about 145 students in outback homesteads and towns. Learning about how the Royal Flying Doctor Service still assists so many families in the outback during emergencies and with medical care was also very interesting. Coober Pedy was also a very unique place!
A break is always nice but it has been good to re-join the staff and students this week and continue on with the good work that has already started in Term 3.
St Dominic’s Feast Day
On Wednesday this week we celebrated St Dominic’s Feast Day with a whole school mass in the Blackfriars Church. This was a special occasion to gather and give thanks to God for the life and example of St Dominic and also for the continuing vocation of Dominicans like Fr Mannes who support many parishes, schools and communities. Dominican sisters established Holy Rosary School in 1963 - and next year we will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of our school!
Fr Mannes spoke to the students and staff about how St Dominic lived his life and devoted much of his time to prayer, study, preaching and serving others in need. Fr Mannes also reminded everyone of the two most important Commandments - Love God and Love your Neighbour (others). This is what St Dominic did in his life in such a humble way and we can strive to do this in our lives too.
Wakakirri - National Story-Dance Festival Success
On Tuesday night this week our Year 5 students participated in the Wakakirri Story and Dance Showcase at the Canberra Theatre. Our students performed a special story titled “The World Beyond The Wardrobe” adapted from the story of The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe.
Their performance was outstanding and polished! The timing of their movement and routines was seamless and the story was filled with lots of drama and suspense. Their audience was in awe with the digital backdrop that framed each part of their story. A huge thanks goes out to one of our parents Rob Wilson for his expertise in designing the digital backdrop. A special thank you to Ylaria Rogers who coached and choreographed our item with our students.
Thank you to three main staff members that made Wakakirri possible - Year 5 teachers Mrs Mogan and Mr Evans, as well as Mr O’Brien. Thank you to Mr Read who constructed our amazing two-way wardrobe. There were so many other staff members and parents that helped with make-up, painting, costumes and other tasks including Miss Rich, Mrs Hinds, Mr Mogan, Miss Webb, Miss Mckerrow and Mrs Vincent and Agi Liso. Thank you Ms van der Sanden and Mrs Welsh for organising the ticketing for everyone to attend.
On the night our students received a Certificate of Excellence for their performance and were commended for their awesome make-up and hair, outstanding costumes and creative use of the signature motif in their story and dance.
Participating in Performing Arts is a fantastic way for students to develop self-confidence, team work, relationships and use of movement. It brings the students together in a common purpose to enjoy the journey and create something memorable. That's exactly what Year 5 did this week. CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 5!
Hats are back!
In SUNSMART terms the June and July cooler winter period is over. From August it is recommended that we all wear hats at peak times as the sun’s UV rays intensify again. So this means HATS On for students from next Monday 8 August. Please dig out your child’s hat/s and ensure they are labelled and ready to wear next week. Thank you.
I wish everyone a wonderful week ahead. Take care in the wet weather.
God Bless
Greg Walker
Principal

ST DOMINIC’S FEAST DAY MASS
On Wednesday, the whole school attended Mass to celebrate the Feast Day of St Dominic. Our school was established by Dominican priests and sisters almost 50 years ago. Dominic is remembered as a preacher, organiser, and patron of learning. He founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) over 800 years ago. The order’s motto of ‘Veritas,’ which means Truth, was founded on their mission to preach the truth about Jesus and God. The Dominican motto, ‘Veritas,’ (Truth) on our Rosary School uniform, is an important reminder of our Dominican heritage and values.

WOMEN’S FAITH CIRCLE
Holy Rosary Parish is hosting an online Women's Faith Circle starting Thursday 11 August @ 8pm. The Circle is an initiative to help connect women from the Holy Rosary Parish and School communities. At a Women's Faith Circle, members gather fortnightly for a time of meditation, reflection, and group discussion.
Three Reasons to join a Women's Faith Circle:
- COMMUNITY: Meet people and reconnect outside of Sunday services.
- CELEBRATION: Rejoice with each other through all seasons of life. We are not alone in our struggles. We know that when women come together, great things happen!
- CONVERSATION: Share the journey of life and pray together.
If this sounds like something you would like to be part of, please email Emily at emilykathrynhall@gmail.com. for further information.
Peace and best wishes

All classes this term are actively participating in their weekly lessons studying the Childrens Book Council of Australia's Shortlisted books. Each week, students create an artistic response to the visual literacies of these outstanding, award-winning texts. With Bookweek only 18 days away, please be mindful of supporting your child in their 'dress-up' or costume choice for Monday, August 22!!!! All students need to bring the book that their 'character' comes from to share during the day. Jodie and I are very happy to assist with any book selections or queries from students or parents. Many students are telling us of their excitement that this special, once a year highlight provides. The Scholastic Bookfair will be set-up in the Library from Aug 22-25 but more about that next week.

Plenty of junior students come to the Library on a Wednesday to do Drawing Club with the Year 6 monitors running the session!

Last Thursday, Mitchell Power (year 5 Panama) and his family attended the ACT Rostrum quarter finals at Canberra Grammar. I was fortunate to hear Mitch and seven other students, from all over Canberra, representing their schools! All speeches were well-crafted and interesting to listen to. Mitch did Rosary proud with a speech that was clear and entertaining. Thank you and well-done Mitch - we are very proud of you!!!

Council Meeting 27 July 2022 Update
Council met last week with John O’Brien attending as Acting Principal. We formally thanked Nicole Kee for her time and contribution to Council and wished her well. Thanks Nicole.
Reports were presented on Finance with up to $300 approved for the purchase of additional basketballs for the children and in support of the current Basketball clinics; Parish with confirmation 16 September; Principal, Fundraising and Teaching. Current enrolments as Rosary are 346 students and this continues to be tracked for identification of trends. The impact of COVID on school staffing, student attendance, and activities was also discussed. Under fundraising we talked about upcoming events in particular the Big Day Challenge along with other fundraising opportunities especially due to the restrictions that have been in place and therefore very few fundraising/social activities have been held. Early preparations have commenced for the Year 6 Graduation. The Teacher’s Report highlighted the upcoming events for this term and the programs scheduled such as the Basketball clinics, Footsteps Dance Program and the Bounce Back Health program.
Specific matters of discussion were a) the progress on the Council membership recruitment. There has been some interest from parents for this and the recruitment process will be open for another couple of weeks. Please feel free to contact Council members at rosarycouncil@gmail.com if you would like to discuss and we look forward to welcoming new members soon; and b) a review that is being undertaken on the Class Contacts and WhatsApp process for communications within the grades at Rosary. There is a bit more work to be done on this and it will evolve over coming weeks.
There has been some progress on planning for the proposed Junior Playground works over the last period and some work done be Council on pursuing opportunities for funding assistance for the refurbishment and partial sprinkler system replacement for the oval. More to come on both these projects as we progress.
Kind regards
Chris Allard (Chair)

If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
IMPORTANT COVID19 REMINDER - Report all Household Cases to the School
