Principals Report Week 5 Term 3
Dear Parents and Carers
Mr O’Brien Long Service Leave
Mr O’Brien will be taking planned Long Service Leave from this Thursday 18 August until Friday 9 September, a period of just over 3 weeks. He is attending a family wedding overseas. I would like to wish Mr O’brien and his family all the best for their trip.
Mrs Liz Higgins will be Acting Assistant Principal at this time. Mrs Higgins has acted in this position previously. Another teacher will act in the role of Religious Education Coordinator for the 3 weeks as well. This will be announced next week.
Week 6 is Book Week
Next week is Book Week across the country and the 2022 theme is ‘Dreaming with eyes open…’ Author and illustrator, Jasmine Seymour, designed the theme and artwork. Jasmine says the theme is about “...seeing ‘country’, dreaming, and all the things that are hidden and also seen. Dreaming is not something that belongs only to the past, it is all around us now, then and always.”
The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week is a fantastic event that promotes the joy reading can bring to young minds! It’s a time to celebrate children’s literature. At Rosary we will celebrate with a special assembly on Monday 22 August presented by Kinder Paris, supported by Year 6 Athens. Students are also invited to dress up as their favourite book character for school on this day. The annual Book Fair will also take place next week.
This is a suitable time to thank Mrs Vincent and Mrs Dawson for all of their great work in the library promoting reading, good literature, visual arts and other forms of rich learning. The library is a wonderful and well-utilised learning hub in the school. I hope everyone has a enjoyable Book Week.

North Canberra/Gungahlin Track and Field Carnival
Next Thursday 25 August the Rosary squad will represent the school at the district level and compete against a number of schools in our region. Good luck to those students selected to participate. Shortly we will also be handing out place ribbons from our recent school events.
CATALYST Curriculum Focus Continues
I like to keep parents and carers informed about our teaching and learning practices. This Friday Rosary staff will again be involved in teaching and coaching sessions related to our pedagogy and classroom practice. This ongoing commitment to the CATALYST initiative ensures that our teachers are embedding research-based strategies that enable explicit teaching, daily revision of concepts and content taught and real-time assessment and feedback with students. There is a real buzz in our classrooms (K-6) during learning time and you can see the students’ engagement and confidence growing.
Here is a bit of an insight into some of the research underpinning our pedagogy. Ollie Lovell, one of the educational experts informing our work, states that “Explicit instruction is unambiguous. That is, it is clear to students what they are learning, and how they are supposed to be learning it.” Lovell also goes on to say, “Both during and after instruction, a teacher must check for understanding. Once they have checked for understanding they are well placed to offer feedback and decide where to take the lesson next.” It is important for the teacher and students to develop a classroom with high expectations and a culture that values and respects learning.
Wishing everyone a good week ahead.
God Bless
Greg Walker
Principal

WOMEN’S FAITH CIRCLE
Holy Rosary Parish is hosting an online Women's Faith Circle starting Thursday 11 August @ 8pm. The Circle is an initiative to help connect women from the Holy Rosary Parish and School communities. At a Women's Faith Circle, members gather fortnightly for a time of meditation, reflection, and group discussion.
Three Reasons to join a Women's Faith Circle:
- COMMUNITY: Meet people and reconnect outside of Sunday services.
- CELEBRATION: Rejoice with each other through all seasons of life. We are not alone in our struggles. We know that when women come together, great things happen!
- CONVERSATION: Share the journey of life and pray together.
If this sounds like something you would like to be part of, please email Emily at emilykathrynhall@gmail.com. for further information.
Peace and best wishes
Liz Higgins
Religious Education Coordinator

With Bookweek only 5 days away, please be mindful of supporting your child in their 'dress-up' or costume choice for Monday, August 22!!!! All students need to bring the book that their 'character' comes from to share during the day. Jodie and I are very happy to assist with any book selections or queries from students or parents. Many students are telling us of their excitement that this special, once a year highlight provides. The Scholastic Bookfair will be set-up in the Library from Aug 22-25 but more about that soon.

Your assistance with this important matter is greatly appreciated.
Whole Day Absences - please submit via Parent Portal
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
The school counsellor, Hilde de Raadt-Abma, is available every Wednesday and Thursday.
You can refer your child for counselling by filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss with Hilde.
Hilde can be contacted via the school or email (hilde.deraadt@catholiccare.cg.org.au) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
