Principals Report Week 8 Term 3
Dear Parents and Carers
Rosary Rugby - Grand Final Winners
Congratulations to Rosary Eagles Under 10 rugby team on winning their grand final last weeknd. The boys said it was a good match but they drew away from their opposition Queanbeyan in the second half to register a comfortable win! Congratulations to all of the players, their coach and all of the team’s officials and supporters. This is the first Rosary rugby team to win a premiership in 10 years! What an outstanding feat. Well done.
Rosary Netball - Royals into the Big Dance!
I was fortunate to be able to attend the netball finals last week at Charnwood and witness our two senior teams in action.
Congratulations to the Year 5/6 Rosary Royals team on winning their semi-final on the weekend. They broke the 3/4 time even score deadlock to win a ‘nail biter’ of a match with an outstanding last quarter to win by 3 goals. Good luck to all of the players, coach, officials and supporters for this big match. Do your best and enjoy the match.
Congratulations also go to the Year 5/6 Rosary Rubies team on their great play and gallant effort in their semi-final match on the weekend. The girls played really well and were just beaten by the final siren. Well done on a great season and a big thank you to your coach, officials and supporters.
Year 5 Wakakirri Awards Night Showcase
Good luck to our Year 5 students for their performance tonight at the Canberra Theatre. Following an outstanding performance in the first round they are now performing in the showcase or presentation evening. What a great opportunity to perform again and simply enjoy the moment! Thank you to the Year 5 teachers, school staff and the parents and carers assisting with the production.
Term 3 ‘Two Glows and One Grow’ - Showcasing Student Achievement
As we have had two periods of parent/teacher interviews in the first two terms of 2022, I thought it wouldn't be beneficial to have another round of interviews in such a short time-frame. Therefore the parent/teachers interviews scheduled in the school calendar on 19/20 September will not occur.
Current COVID restrictions don’t permit you to visit your child’s classroom or events, however, it is important to share feedback on your child’s learning regularly. This term the staff and I have decided to showcase student achievement and areas to develop for this term in a new way. It is called ‘Two Glows and One Grow’. Each class teacher will discuss the learning achievements and challenges with each student in their class and then collaborate on two areas they have shown growth in achievement and one area that they agree needs to be developed further (like a goal for them to work towards achieving next).
The areas in which each student shines in at school and the areas they need to improve are most likely different. As the students need their workbooks etc to keep working at school next term, the teacher and student will also select some evidence and work samples of the two GLOWS to share with you - either copied or in a digital version. We hope you will be proud of their work!
Areas selected are based on a strength baked approach and we hope the information provided will open up some good learning conversations for students with both their parents/carers and their teacher.
The ‘Two Glows and One Grow’ information will be shared with you in Week 10 - on Tuesday 20 September. Please remember if you would like to discuss your child’s learning or another aspect of school, you are encouraged to contact your class teacher at any time of a school term.
School Support Staff Week
Last week we celebrated national support staff week in our school. Our support staff do an amazing job teaching and assisting our students. They help make our school a better place and add those nice touches to the way we operate as a school. We thanked them with a special morning tea and some of our students created portraits of them in appreciation.
Here is a selection of the staff portraits!
Just a reminder that the next pupil free day is to be held at Rosary and across A.C.T. primary Schools tomorrow Friday 9 September. Staff will be involved in relevant professional learning and undertaking administration and tasks related to their roles. Our OSHClub service is unable to operate on this day.
Coming Up:
- Year 6 Sacrament of Confirmation and Retreat Day
- Mini Beast Day - Year 1 students
- STEM Workshops
School Registration Panel - St Thomas Aquinas West Belconnen
This week I have been a panel member on the school registration panel for St Thomas Aquinas Primary School West Belconnen. It has been a wonderful opportunity to spend time in this school and validate their teaching and learning and see the types of initiatives in place to meet the needs of their students. There are always new ideas that can sometimes be relevant to other schools so it has been a great experience.
Staff News
Congratulations to Ms Rebecca van de Sanden and her partner Byron on their recent engagement! This is wonderful news and we wish them both well at this exciting time.
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.
God Bless

YEAR 2 LITURGY
Thank you to the Year 2 teachers for preparing the students for their class liturgy last week. Thank you also to all the parents and family members who were able to join them in their prayerful celebration.
MICHAEL MANGAN CONCERT
Michael Mangan will be performing for the students at school on 14 September. He is a composer, teacher, performer and liturgist who is based in Brisbane, Australia. We use some of Michael’s songs in our masses and liturgies. His concerts are highly interactive and fun and aim to:
- inspire children and teachers to participate enthusiastically
- celebrate our Catholic Identity in song
- help students focus on the themes and liturgical seasons behind the songs
- introduce and help teach a new repertoire quickly.
WOMEN’S FAITH CIRCLE
Three Reasons to join a Women's Faith Circle:
- COMMUNITY: Meet people and reconnect outside of Sunday services.
- CELEBRATION: Rejoice with each other through all seasons of life. We are not alone in our struggles. We know that when women come together, great things happen!
- CONVERSATION: Share the journey of life and pray together.
If this sounds like something you would like to be part of, please email Emily at emilykathrynhall@gmail.com. for further information.
Peace and best wishes

NEAR MISS
There was a report of a near miss in the carpark this week. Concerningly, a parent and child were almost run over whilst crossing the carpark to get to the quad gates. Small lapses in concentration are all that it takes for an accident to occur in such an environment. We ask all drivers to be mindful of the car park rules and to adhere to them on every occasion for the safety of the children and all others in our community.
CARPARK SAFETY MEASURES
- The speed limit in the car park is 5km/h.
- All students walking to or from parked cars need to be accompanied by an adult.
- The drop off zone is for morning use only. The purpose of the drop off zone is to allow students to alight safely from vehicles directly onto school grounds without having to cross the car park.
- In the afternoon, the drop off zone is not in useas it impedes pedestrian safety as parents and students make their way to parked vehicles on the asphalt.
- Parking is not permittedalong any red kerb on school grounds.
- The carpark (apart from the area near the hall) is designed for forward traffic flow to reduce the need for reversing.
- There is a stop sign at the exit gate to remind drivers to stop and look out for persons who may be crossing there.

Rosary v Queanbeyan
Match Report
Congratulations to the Rosary Eagles U10’s, who beat Queanbeyan Whites in the Grand final on Saturday.
Queanbeyan have had a solid year and looked like a tough opposition, but on the day the Rosary boys proved too strong.
Rosary jumped the opposition early with solid defence and did not give the opposition an inch, scoring four tries in the first half.
A solid team effort proved the difference in the second half when the Whites made a comeback. The boys knuckled down to playing a solid defence game and managed to sneak in a couple more tries. As always, every player stood out at some point during the game, demonstrating their commitment to the team and the importance of the day.
It’s been a fantastic season to be involved in and we have received some pretty amazing external feedback about how the boys work as a team in defence and attack, and how they have improved game by game. This is something we can all be very proud of.
Big thank you to all the parents, for getting the boys to training and games each week. A special thank you also, to John Cullen for coaching and Steve Monahan for managing the team this year.
Well Done Team! We are already looking forward to doing it all again next year.
Jed Perks - Year 5 Washington School Sport Australia 12 Years and Under Boys Hockey Championships
Year 5 Rosary student Jed Perks represented the ACT as Goalkeeper in the Under 12 Boys Australian Hockey Championships here in Canberra on 21-26 August 2022.
The boys played teams representing Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland over four days. Competition was tough and the ACT narrowly missed third place after a tense final game against Queensland. Though they didn’t receive medals this year, they learned the importance of teamwork, communication, courage and playing in the spirit of the game.
Jed demonstrated strong goal keeping skills and courage throughout the tournament, stopping high balls, executing slide tackles and saving the only penalty stroke in the whole competition in the final game, all of which earned him the award for most valuable player in that game.
The Australian Championships are the culmination of Jed’s achievements in hockey this year. Jed plays goalkeeper for United Hockey Club in Under 11 boys Division 1 and Under 13 boys Division 2. He was also selected as Goalkeeper for four regional carnivals across the state during the season.
Jed has been playing hockey for three years and has played as a specialist goalkeeper for two years. We wish Jed luck this weekend in his teams’ finals games.
Scarlett and Sienna have represented the ACT this past weekend at the Australian Calisthenics Federation National Championship as part of the ACT Sub Juniors Team. They were selected into the team at the end of 2021 and have worked very hard since to prepare for competition.
Here are some different pictures from the comp!
To add onto their Rep team achievement, the girls traveled to Sydney last weekend with their regular calisthenics club team to compete in the NSW Calisthenics Championships where they were awarded 1st place overall.

Hayfever season has arrived with the weather being particularly windy and the pollen count high. We have had many children coming to the front office with hayfever symptoms. If your child is prone to hayfever please consider the treatment you would like them to receive. If you would like your child to be given hayfever medication please fill in a Request to Dispense Medication Form and provide the medication to be stored in the First Aid area. Parents will be contacted prior to any medication being administered. On particularly windy days you may like to consider treating your child before they attend school.
The Request to Dispense Medication Form can be accessed via this link: Request to Dispense Medication and on the school website.
The school counsellor, Hilde de Raadt-Abma, is available every Wednesday and Thursday.
You can refer your child for counselling by filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss with Hilde.
Hilde can be contacted via the school or email (hilde.deraadt@catholiccare.cg.org.au) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
For students, learning how to support their peers and talk about how they feel is an important life lesson. You don’t need to be an expert to have an R U OK? conversation. Listening and giving someone your time might be just what they need to help them through.
At Rosary this year, teachers will be using age-appropriate resources to teach children how to ask R U OK?
The resources have been designed to introduce and emphasise the value of close connections and strong relationships. Rosary encourages students to look out for their classmates by asking R U OK?

The Rosary Clothing Pool is open to families to purchase second hand uniform items for $5 per piece. Respect Pride and Safety (Rosary Primary School)
Respect Pride and Safety (Rosary Primary School)
Introducing, modelling, and reinforcing positive social behaviours is an important step of a student’s educational experience.
Each term we focus on teaching positive behaviour at Rosary. This term we are asking students to remember that we are a ‘Hands Off’ school. Our school rules always fall under the banner of Respect Pride and Safety (RPS).
Teachers will be reminding students that games and interactions must be ‘Hands Off’. Our aim is to promote harmony and safety within our school community. Students are also provided with language they can use if someone uses “Hands On’.
‘STOP IT. I DON’T LIKE IT.’
Students are encouraged to go to a teacher and ask for help if someone is using ‘Hands On’.
Signage can be seen in classrooms and corridors to reinforce this positive message.
Hands Off Please!
It’s the Rosary Way………
