Principals Report Week 1 Term 4
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back for Term 4. I hope you have all had a break of some sort in the past two weeks and that the students are refreshed and ready to keep up their learning in Term 4.
COVID Update
As you may be aware, COVID restrictions have been lifted in pretty much all areas of the ACT and Schools for Term 4. We all have to be very mindful that the transition back to full participation in school and community events needs to be carefully considered.
- We still need to ensure that students, staff and visitors that are unwell do not attend school.
- Be vigilant and respect that good safety and hygiene practices remain in place including hand sanitising, social distances, good ventilation etc.
There is no formal COVID roadmap or guidelines in place for schools in the ACT now. This will be the first time in nearly 3 years that we find ourselves in this situation.
I will provide more information later this week on the access for parents to the school and events.
Big Challenge Success!
What a great Big Challenge Day we had on Friday 23 September. Students really pushed themselves hard to complete a range of activities and skill challenges. This took them out of their comfort zone a bit and they encouraged each other to shoot one more goal, ‘plank’ for longer, do some extra dance moves, stretch into a new yoga position, run faster, cooperate and complete team games, push through the boot camp tasks and even balance the eggs on spoons while running (an old favourite)!
The weather was kind to us that day and everyone had heaps of fun and gave their best efforts. Thank you to the staff that ran the events and to everyone for supporting the day.
The fundraising support from families, friends and members of the community has been amazing - with generous donations and pledges being made. Well done to everyone.
The BIG CHALLENGE REWARD DAY will be held on Friday 28 October. Mr O’Brien and I will be dressing up as SuperHeroes on the day - we just don’t know which ones yet! The students are voting on the costume they want me to wear…
… and there will be lots of rewarding activities for the students. More information to follow about the day.
New Interactive TV Screens Installed in all Rosary Classrooms
This week all of the classroom and learning areas of the school will have new interactive TV panels installed. These new screens will replace the Interactive Whiteboards that have been used for many years in our classrooms. There will be an incredible improvement in the image quality and technological applications that these new panels will provide for teaching and learning for students and staff.
The school has invested strongly in this IT replacement program to ensure that every classroom can have this technology available to them now. Teachers are being inserviced in the application and functionality of the new devices, including the wireless use of the panels.
Thank you so much to the Rosary Community Council that has supported this investment in IT and made this program achievable through their donation. Our Community Council Chair, Chris Allard states:
‘Council is very happy to have been able to help with the purchase of the new classroom and library interactive screens. The fantastic support the school community gives to our fundraising activities has allowed us to provide $20,000 towards this great advancement in the classrooms which will benefit all children and teachers.’
I would like to thank Mr John O’Brien for all of his ongoing work with IT across the school and for facilitating this upgrade program.
School Bubbler/Toilet Landing Area Rectification
During the school holidays and first week of school, significant work has been done on rectifying the damaged concrete surfaces in the Quad bubbler and toilet area. A substantial area of concrete has been replaced and a number of new drains have been installed to extract any excess water. Some structural repairs and painting work has also been done in this area. This area should be open for use again by Week 2.
This work has been carried out through the funds raised from the Catholic Education Building Levy which is part of the contribution you make through school fees to the system.
School Intensive Swimming Program Cancelled
Unfortunately the annual swimming program that students participate in has been cancelled for Term 4 2022. Due to COVID, the AIS pool had to cancel our booking as they are not conducting any school based swimming programs given the COVID restrictions and staff shortgates etc. Therefore there will be no swimming program levy included in your Term 4 school fees account.
Water awareness, learning to swim, building swimming proficiency are all important steps for children to develop. I encourage you to seek other alternatives for your child to participate in small group lessons at your local pool over the summer months.
The current COVID situation in the ACT and at Rosary are both looking very positive for Term 4. The school calendar includes lots of events including (but not limited to):
- Sacrament of Reconciliation Preparation and Celebration
- Remaining Class Assemblies for Whole School
- Excursions and Incursions
- Week 2 - 3 day Year 6 Local Camp Program
- Week 3 - 3 day Year 5 Jindabyne Camp
- Tabloid Sports Program
- Footsteps Dance Program
- Various Orientation, Graduation and End-of-Year Celebrations
I wish you all a great start to the term. God Bless.

Hayfever season has arrived with the weather being particularly windy and the pollen count high. We have had many children coming to the front office with hayfever symptoms. If your child is prone to hayfever please consider the treatment you would like them to receive. If you would like your child to be given hayfever medication please fill in a Request to Dispense Medication Form and provide the medication to be stored in the First Aid area. Parents will be contacted prior to any medication being administered. On particularly windy days you may like to consider treating your child before they attend school.
The Request to Dispense Medication Form can be accessed via this link: Request to Dispense Medication and on the school website.
Respect Pride and Safety (Rosary Primary School)
Respect Pride and Safety (Rosary Primary School)
Introducing, modelling, and reinforcing positive social behaviours is an important step of a student’s educational experience.
Each term we focus on teaching positive behaviour at Rosary. This term we are asking students to remember that we are a ‘Hands Off’ school. Our school rules always fall under the banner of Respect Pride and Safety (RPS).
Teachers will be reminding students that games and interactions must be ‘Hands Off’. Our aim is to promote harmony and safety within our school community. Students are also provided with language they can use if someone uses “Hands On’.
‘STOP IT. I DON’T LIKE IT.’
Students are encouraged to go to a teacher and ask for help if someone is using ‘Hands On’.
Signage can be seen in classrooms and corridors to reinforce this positive message.
Hands Off Please!
It’s the Rosary Way………

Whole Day Absences / Late Arrival / Early Departures - via Parent Portal
Whole Day Absences
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
Late Arrival / Early Departures
Your assistance with this important matter is greatly appreciated.
The school counsellor, Hilde de Raadt-Abma, is available every Wednesday and Thursday.
You can refer your child for counselling by filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss with Hilde.
Hilde can be contacted via the school or email (hilde.deraadt@catholiccare.cg.org.au) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
