Principals Report Week 6 Term 4
Dear Parents and Carers
Wow it's hard to believe it is Week 6 already!
It is great though to see our students out and about and involved in so many different events and activities. We are now starting to plan for 2023 and finalise our staff and student placements.
Kindergarten Orientation
Today we had a wonderful 2023 Kindergarten orientation session with our new students and families. This is always an exciting day and an important step in the transition process for these children.
Thank you to our current Kindergarten Parents who provided a lovely morning tea for our new families and to our Community Council members for their support today.
2023 Class Lists Process
Teachers will shortly draft our classes for 2023. This year I will not be calling for class list or student placement considerations from parents and carers for our 2023 lists. I understand this will be a change from previous years. Teachers will use their knowledge of how students have progressed and interacted this year, as well as the ‘Friendship 5’ information each student provides (see below).
Forming class groups is a complex task but my experience is that school staff have access to the relevant information and data collected throughout the year to place students in appropriate classes for the following year. As we are essentially a two-stream school (with the exception of Year 2 in 2023) the staff and I only have the option of two classes in each year level in which to place students, making it near impossible to successfully place your child in a certain group or separate students when requests are made.
Ongoing communication and feedback is important and I encourage you to continually keep in contact with your child’s class teacher about any of your concerns, as well as your child's interests and successes. The school should be aware of any issues at school.
Ultimately, the school has the role to make the decision on the best class groups each year within the parameters we have, with the goal being for every student successfully transitioning from year to year. We are looking to give all students opportunities to engage in learning and do their best work.
Be assured, your child’s current teacher and other key staff in the school, know your child well and have their best interests at heart. All staff, including myself and the executive team, will continue to be actively involved in the life of the school, making adjustments, supporting students and encouraging them to succeed.
As in previous years:
- Students will be able to provide their teachers with a ‘Friendship 5’ list of people they would like to be with in a class next year. We will ensure that all students will have at least one person from their list in their 2023 class.
- Students will meet their 2023 teacher, along with any new enrolments, in Week 10, before the holiday break.
You may still have time to talk to your child about who they select as part of the ‘Friendship 5’ process. Classes will do this over the next week. This process is not simply about choosing other students your child likes but it is also about identifying students your child works well with. Learning is paramount and some friends being together does not always equate to a better learning environment. I’ll leave this with you to consider.
Again, thanks for your support.
Wishing you a great week ahead. Take care.
God bless.

The Rosary Community Council is now calling on nominations for 2023 Class Contacts. Class Contacts are an integral part of the Rosary School Community, and the Council greatly appreciates all parent volunteers. Please find the flyer and nomination form below.
Hayfever season has arrived with the weather being particularly windy and the pollen count high. We have had many children coming to the front office with hayfever symptoms. If your child is prone to hayfever please consider the treatment you would like them to receive.
If you would like your child to be given hayfever medication please fill in a Request to Dispense Medication Form and provide the medication to be stored in the First Aid area.
Parents will be contacted prior to any medication being administered. On particularly windy days you may like to consider treating your child before they attend school.
The Request to Dispense Medication Form can be accessed via this link: Request to Dispense Medication and on the school website.
Earth Science International Science Olympiad - Congratulations to Ex Rosary Student Georgia Tonkin
Rosary ex-student Georgia Tonkin has recently participated in the Earth Science International Science Olympiad. She was one of only 2 students from the ACT and one of 8 from the Australian team. The competition was held virtually (due to covid) and we are pleased to say that Georgia earned herself a Bronze Olympic Medal. Part of the preparation included an Australia wide study on microplastic pollution from synthetic turf conducted by the Australian team, in which Georgia surveyed Rosary's Junior playground.
Georgia will graduate from Year 12 at Merici College this year and will continue her love of science by studying Advanced Science at university next year. Well done Georgia!

Please note that currently only one family is allowed in the room at any one time and hand sanitisation is required upon entry and exit. A key is available from the front office to access the room during school hours for your convenience.
All new uniform items can be purchased from Personally Yours. They are located at 218 Gladstone St, Fyshwick ACT 2609 and can be contacted on 6280 4166.
The school counsellor, Hilde de Raadt-Abma, is available every Wednesday and Thursday.
You can refer your child for counselling by filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss with Hilde.
Hilde can be contacted via the school or email (hilde.deraadt@catholiccare.cg.org.au) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Whole Day Absences via Parent Portal
Whole Day Absences
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
