Principals Report Week 8 Term 2
Dear Parents and Carers
Semester One Reports and Parent Teacher Conferences
Teachers are in the process of finalising Semester One reports for students in their class. Your child’s report will be available for you to access through the COMPASS portal on Wednesday 21 June (Week 9).
We then encourage all parents and carers to book a Parent Teacher Conference
with their child’s teacher on either Monday 26 June or Tuesday 27 June (week 10). Shortly teachers will provide the times available on these days for you to book online. More information will be available soon.
In regard to the format of student reports in 2023, Catholic Education Canberra-Goulburn (CECG) has communicated to all schools that general comments will not be required on Semester 1, 2023 reports, but to prioritise Parent/Teacher Conferences for every family. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, their strengths, challenges and future areas of focus. A Semester Report will be available as in previous semesters providing A-E grading and attendance information.
CECG has advised schools that Semester 2, 2023 reports will require a general comment for all children. This general comment will provide a summative comment for the year, areas of achievement and areas to focus on for the following year. A-E grading and attendance information will remain as normal. We would encourage all parents/guardians to engage regularly with their child/ren’s learning, connecting with their class teacher/s regularly to discuss learning progress.
Australian Federal Police Thinkuknow Program - Years 3-6 Students
Just for your information, today students in Years 3-6 participated in the ThinkUKnow program delivered by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Team. This may be a good opportunity for you to discuss with your child the information and strategies discussed during the session today. It was only a brief session of one hour but there may be questions your child has about how to use and access online resources and platforms.
For more information, including resources for parents, carers and teachers, visit the ThinkUKnow website.
The AFP has a significant role to play in ensuring children and young people are safe, no matter what environment they are in. In fulfilling this role, the AFP has forged strong partnerships with all Australian law enforcement agencies, many international agencies, government departments, industry and not-for-profit organisations.
The AFP are involved in many crime prevention and awareness raising initiatives, particularly in relation to keeping young people safe online. The ThinkUKnow program is led by the AFP and delivered nationally in partnership with law enforcement and industry to raise awareness and educate the community about preventing online child sexual exploitation.
The program addresses areas such as self-produced child exploitation (sexting), privacy and inappropriate/unwanted contact, online grooming, image-based abuse, sexual extortion and importantly encourages help seeking behaviour.
Presentations for students are delivered nationally in schools through State and Territory police partners, aiming to facilitate positive engagement with young people and law enforcement while equipping students with the knowledge and skills to be able to take actionable steps to maintain their safety at all times.
Presentations for parents, carers and teachers are delivered by volunteers from law enforcement and industry partners. Presentations cover what young people See, Say and Do online, the challenges they may face and how to take action through reporting and supporting. These presentations are also supported by home learning activities designed for parents and carers to do with their children so that everyone can learn together.
All student resources are aligned with the Australian Curriculum and use up-to-date research and real case studies to illustrate the challenges students may face and how to get help.
Rosary School will host this annual chess competition this Friday 16th June. Competition games will be held in the school hall under competition rules and standards. This year we have approximately 16 Rosary girls participating, which is fantastic! We have more than 100 students from a number of schools attending, including students from Young, NSW.
Thank you to Mrs Dawson and Mrs Vincent who have organised for Rosary to host the event. Our weekly Rosary Chess Club sessions are still going strong, and it is good to see that the students that are ready to compete and are able to through these competition days.

We are well over the halfway mark for the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge! For those who are unfamiliar with this initiative, Rosary has participated in this challenge since its inception. Children in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 are completing this as a class through their library lessons this year. Whilst Years 3-6 are encouraged to read 30 books, some within library lessons and others, in their own time at school or home. Students record the books they are reading, being read too, or reading to others. There are book prizes donated by Paperchain Bookshop which are awarded if the challenge is completed by the end date. As we move quickly to the finishing line, which is 11th August, I encourage students to continue to keep engaging in good quality literature and read, read, read!
This term we have had a lot of excitement and interest promoting a variety of titles and book series. Students are enjoying the Eva Amores and Matt Cosgrove series ‘Worst Week Ever’ and the ‘Football Superstars’ series. ‘The Travelling Bookshop’, Bear Grylls and Matt Stanton’s ‘Funny Kid’ series are also proving to be popular with our students. Cooking books have also been a favourite this term, I can only imagine there are many delicious treats and sweets being cooked in households!
In Library, this semester Year 3 have been looking at the amazing work of author/illustrator Jeannie Baker. The students have read and explored her many books marvelling over her collage work. This term they have had the opportunity to look at her newly released book ‘Desert Jungle’ as well as create their own collage which are displayed on the pinboard outside the Library. Don’t they look amazing!
Also, just a friendly reminder borrowing will cease at the end of next week in preparation for the holidays. Please check at home for any library books with barcodes and return them as soon as possible.

Apparently the Salami Cups were great and those who attended the Open Meeting enjoyed them and our light supper and opportunity to meet very much!
Last week Council held its annual Open Meeting with attendance from some parents of the school community. We received an update on activities being planned for the upcoming 60th Birthday celebrations and now need to meet again separately so we can finalise dates etc and get the dates out to save in your diaries. From what we heard it promises to have something for everyone. Many thanks to all those involved. Watch your school communications for updates.
Additionally we discussed the progress of the Grounds Masterplan project. This is moving along well and many thanks goes to all those who participated in the workshops and survey. Our open consultation process is complete and the next stage is to produce some draft options drawings for comment. Again as above, what communications for more information. Thanks to the committee working on this project.
The Open Meeting provided reports from the Principal (nice to see Greg looking well again after his absence), Kath Watson as the Teacher representative, Treasurer and Fundraising Coordinator.
Our thanks to those who managed to get to the Open Meeting despite the cold weather. We really do appreciate your support in coming along.
Council meets again in Week 2 of Term 3.

Whole Day Absences via Parent Portal
Whole Day Absences
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence. There is no need to adjust times for whole day absences.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
The school counsellor, is available every Thursday and Friday.
You can refer your child for counselling by contacting the school or filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss this with the counsellor.
Access to the clothing pool will now be as follows:

Tuesday - Friday - Before and after school only
Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who maintain the space for our community.
