Principals Report Week 3 Term 3
Dear Parents and Carers
Happy St Dominic’s Day and 60th Anniversary Week!
60th Anniversary Celebrations
Yesterday's special Mass was to celebrate the Feast Day of St Dominic and to celebrate our respective 60th Anniversaries and to give thanks for all who have contributed to the communities of Blackfriars Parish, Australian Catholic University (formally Signadou) and Rosary Primary School over the past 60 years.
The mass was concelebrated by Vicar General, Fr Richard Thompson, our Parish Priest Fr Mannes Tellis OP, and our Australian Catholic University Chaplain Fr Joshua Scott.
Many esteemed guests were present from the Signadou era and the Australian Catholic University including Pro-Chancellor Virginia Bourke, Vice-Chancellor Zlato Skrbis and Canberra Campus Dean Associate Professor Darius von Guttner.
The special guests that attended associated with Rosary Primary School included :
Mr Ross Fox, Director of Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn
Dr Patrick McArdle, Chancellor of Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn.
Mrs Meg Clarke and Mrs Moira Sutch, the first two lay principals of Rosary School.
Mrs Ann Moore - retired Rosary School Office Secretary - 30 years service at Rosary.
Significant past Rosary staff members and parents.
Sister Margaret Brown OP, Sister Rosemary Lewins OP and Sister Pauline Riley OP, foundational principals of Signadou College of Education, now the Australian Catholic University.
The mass was a lovely celebration. Our students were very reverent and their singing was beautiful with many visitors mentioning it was the highlight of the mass. Thank you to Liz Higgins for organising the mass in conjunction with ACU and to John O‘Brien for leading the music and singing. All Rosary students and special guests received a commemorative 60th Anniversary badge prior to mass and wore it to mass. Students are permitted to wear this badge on their school uniform during the remainder of 2023.
Following the mass our students enjoyed a special pizza lunch and some well-deserved extra play time. Thank you to Libby Reardon, Vice -Chair of our Community Council and all parent volunteers who assisted with organising and serving the lunch for our students. Thank you to Melissa in the canteen for again supporting a special lunch for our students.
Year 5 Outstanding Wakakirri Performance
Congratulations to our Year 5 students on their fantastic Wakakirri performance last night at the Canberra Theatre. They were outstanding in their story and dance portrayal of the classic Snow White fairy tale. The audience were very appreciative and gave our school a huge round of applause at the end of the show.
Their performance was magical with the story brought to life with superb and very colourful costumes, perfectly timed acting and energetic dancing.
Thank you so much to Mrs Nicole Mogan, Mr Rob Read and Mr John O’Brien for all of their expertise and creativity in helping bring this performance to life. Thank you also to our choreographer Renee Mandanici-Baldwin for inspiring our students to tell the story in a synchronised and dramatic way. Thank you to Rob Wilson, one of our parents, for creating our magical digital backdrop for the performance. It was stunning. Thank you to the staff and parents that helped with make-up, costumes and moral support.
Kindergarten Assembly - 101 Days at School!
Well done to Kindergarten Paris and Kindergarten Nagoya students on a very entertaining assembly on Tuesday afternoon. They celebrated 101 days at school with a dalmatian theme that set the scene for a great show.
The students also shared lots about their learning from the first half of their Kindergarten year. This included examples of their writing, reading and their beautiful theme song about kindness.
Thank you to Ms Karen Green and Mrs Ann-Maree Hinds for all of their work with their students and in creating this wonderful performance for us to enjoy. The students stole the show with their cute dalmatian costumes and big smiles! They also celebrated the special occasion with activities with their Year 6 buddies earlier in the day.

Reminder - No Dogs are Allowed on Rosary School Grounds
For safety and health reasons dogs are not allowed on Rosary School Grounds. There is signage to this effect on both sides of our school fence line. Apologies to our dog lovers but this is for the best for all members of the Rosary School Community.
By school grounds we mean - dogs must be kept outside the perimeter fence line of the school. Students, staff and families do access various parts of our grounds as they enter and leave for school and their safety does come first.
Thanks for your support in this matter.
Matildas
Congratulations to the Matildas on their win over Canada earlier this week and progressing to the round of 16 in the Women’s World Cup.
What a week of celebration it has been! Wishing you all the best for the next week ahead.
God Bless

Book Week is Fast Approaching!
This year the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week Theme is READ, GROW, INSPIRE. I would like to remind all Rosary families that this year’s Book Week falls in Week Six of Term Three (21st - 25th August). Book Week is an annual celebration that is a highlight for all students! As mentioned in previous newsletters, there will be a dress-up day on Friday, August 25. This can be as simple as dressing up as a 'normal' character from a fiction book or as detailed as having your child dressed in a costume character from a book. Please be mindful of the suitability of props e.g., swords and ensure students have suitable, appropriate shoes e.g., runners. There is no competition...it is merely a day to celebrate all that is wonderful about BOOKS! They will have an opportunity to share what they love about their books and costumes in class. The only requirement is that each child needs to have the book their dress-up relates to. Please see me if you are having trouble securing a book that relates to your child's dress-up character.
Our annual Book Fair will be held in the Library from Monday afternoon, August 21st and open from 8.30am - 9am and again at 3.10- 4.30pm every day until Friday 25th August. There will be a large selection of books to purchase for your children with a percentage of sales being returned to the library in books and resources.
Author/Illustrator Visit-Sami Bayly
We are excited to announce that we are lucky enough to have Sami Bayly visiting Rosary on Monday 21st August. Sami Bayly is well known in Australia and internationally for her ‘The Illustrated Encyclopaedia series.’ She has won and been nominated for numerous awards. Students in Years 3-6 will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation by Sami and learn about scientific illustration. Below is a flyer, should you wish to pre-order one of Sami Bayly’s books that she will sign on the day.
Mrs Dawson
Council met last week and were provided an update on the 2 major events/projects being planned at present. The first was the 60th Anniversary celebrations with detail on the Mass followed by student’s lunch and then planning for the celebratory function for 4th November so put that date in your diaries now. More information will be available soon.
We also received a report on the audit of the oval irrigation system. There is work to be done on the system to bring it to an operational state and we await some further information to determine whether fixing it is cost effective or whether it requires a complete replacement. Draft designs for the oval and playground areas are imminent.
Council reviewed applications for roles on the Council and will welcome 3 new members to the next meeting being James Matthews, David Battey and James Macpherson. Congratulations to them all and we look forward to their contributions to the Rosary School community. We are still requiring 2 more members for 2024 so please consider nominating. A WhatsApp communication will follow on this.
Greg Walker advised that there is to be an accessibility audit undertaken at the school shortly and also a visit to discuss a new school masterplan being developed. He also confirmed that enrolments have been successful and there will continue to be 15 classes in 2024 with the same make up as this year. There was also a discussion around the new NAPLAN and resultant reporting.
Fr Mannes advised of the passing of former parish priest Fr Rafael Cabezon (PP 1990-1996). Fr Rafael passed away after a short battle with lung cancer. He was 80 years of age. He now rests with our Heavenly Father.

Whole Day Absences via Parent Portal
Whole Day Absences
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence. There is no need to adjust times for whole day absences.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
The school counsellor, is available every Thursday and Friday.
You can refer your child for counselling by contacting the school or filling in a referral form available on Catholic Care’s website or follow this link: https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form
After you have filled out the referral form you will automatically be sent an email requesting your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss this with the counsellor.
Access to the clothing pool will now be as follows:
Monday - All Day (school hours)
Tuesday - Friday - Before and after school only
Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who maintain the space for our community.
