Principals Report Week 6 Term 3
Dear Parents and Carers
What a wonderful few weeks it has been at Rosary!
BOOK WEEK
This week is Book Week, one of the most exciting weeks of the year. It is great to promote reading and develop a love for reading amongst our students. The 2023 theme is READ, GROW, INSPIRE.
Author/Illustrator Sami Bayly visited Rosary and spoke to students on Mondays. The students loved her talk and explanation about how and why she enjoys writing about interesting animals. Samy’s illustrations are also very creative and she drew some with the students while presenting to each group.
Thank you to our Teacher Librarian Mrs Jodie Dawson for all of her hard work organising our Book Week activities and celebrations. Mrs Dawson has been very creative and dressed up as different book characters each morning to give the students some ideas for their dress up parade on Friday morning this week. We also have the Friday afternoon Book Week assembly to look forward to! Well done Jodie.
Thank you also to our parents and carers for supporting the Book Fair this week and looking to buy a book or piece of merchandise to further promote their child’s reading.
Thank you to our STEM teacher Mrs Kath Watson for organising another author to talk to our Year 3-6 students this week in Book Week and just after the National Science Week. The author’s name is Bjorn Sturmberg. He is a local Watson resident who works on clean energy research at the Australian National University. He has a passion for STEM and education and is the author of a children's book about the clean energy transition, Amy's Balancing Act. He is very active in science communication (recognised with a 2022 Young Tall Poppy award).
“Amy’s Balancing Act” is an inspiring tale about clean energy and the power of diversity. This unique story packs the complexities and emotions of the journey to clean energy into an engaging, entertaining book that can be understood by children, their families and educators. It provides a positive resolution to the climate wars – being respectful to the past while clear eyed about a brighter future. (Bjorn Sturmberg).
Rosary Athletics Carnival Success
Congratulations to everyone on a very successful Rosary athletics carnival on Friday 11 August at Dickson playing fields. The day went very well and the students really enjoyed participating in the various track and field events. The weather was kind to us this time and a good day was had by all.
Thank you to our sports coordinator Mrs Elizabeth Fryar for organising the carnival and leading it on the day. Thank you to our parents and carers for volunteering to help on the day and for cheering our students on.
The winning house on the day were CHISHOLM! Congratulations!
Year 5 Wakakirri - Into the Awards Finals Night
Congratulations to our Year 5 students and staff on the news that they will now participate in the Wakakirri Awards Night on Tuesday 12 September. What a wonderful thrill it will be to perform again at the Canberra Theatre. It is a great honour to be selected as one of the best performing schools during the heats. Good luck preparing to do it all again!
Entertaining Year 4 Assembly
Well done to Year 4 students and teachers on a very entertaining assembly last Friday. It was great to see them share aspects of their recent learning. They shared many of their projects and visual presentations about addressing climate change now! I was really impressed with the students' use of IT to present some really compelling arguments about ways to change our lifestyles to slow down or reverse climate change. When you hear the voices of our youth it is hard not to feel proud and inspired that the future of our world is in good hands.
It was also delightful to listen to students speak about the experience of receiving their First Eucharist this year.
Rostrum Public Speaking Semi-Final
Good Luck to Eve Andonovski (Year 4) for her speech tonight at the Rostrum Semi-Final to be held at North Ainslie Primary School. What a great honour for Eve to be able to present her talk and topic to a new audience of students, parents and teachers at this level. Public speaking takes a lot of courage and practise and we wish Eve all the best!
Rosary Chess Team in ACT Finals
On Thursday 17 August our top Rosary team competed in the ACT Chess Finals held at Trinity Christian School Wanniassa. What a great achievement! Our team consisted of Thien Vu, Max Pedregrosa, Charlie Lenarduzzi and Andrew Pham.
Each player played a number of full games on the day and did very well. Well done to our players and to Mrs Jodie Dawson for organising our team for the event and to our parents that attended with their children. Chess is very popular at Rosary and its great to aspire to play against the best. Keep up the great work!
Students to Wear Hats for Sun Protection Now
The SunSmart Association recommends that all students wear hats again from August as the temperature and sun rating factors begin to rise again. All students should be wearing hats again now when outside at school. Please remember to label their hats and try to have a spare hat available for those times their first hat is misplaced. Thank you for supporting SunSmart practices.
Winter Sports Seasons Coming to a closure
I wanted to wish our Rosary School teams in the local netball and rugby competitions all the best for their final games of the year. For some teams their last game will be this while we have our senior netball and rugby teams destined to play finals in their respective competitions. Go Rosary!!
May the spirit of the Aussie Matilda's great performance at the Football World Cup inspire all of our budding young athletes in all sports to participate well, enjoy their sport and aim for the stars! Everything is possible!
It has been so pleasing to be able to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of so many Rosary students in this newsletter.
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.
God Bless.
Greg Walker
Principal

Library News - Book Week Is Here!
Book Week is finally here……. and what a week it has been, and it is only Wednesday!!!
Sami Bayly
On Monday the students in Years 3-6 participated in a workshop with the amazing Sami Bayly. She had the students captivated as she shared the amazing, wonderful world of weird and unusual animals. Students learned how to draw some ugly, dangerous, or peculiar pairs. The drawings by the students were very impressive and I hope that you have had the opportunity to see them at home, or at the very least heard a story about a weird and wonderful creature! The students even learned some unusual collective nouns.
Matt Cosgrove Virtual Visit
This week K-2 will have the opportunity to do a virtual workshop with Matt Cosgrove on Thursday 24th August. The students will be able to listen to Matt read one of his books from the Macca the Alpacca series and participate in a drawing activity. Thank you to Ms Green and Mrs Cox-Koelmeyer for alerting us to this great learning opportunity.
Book Fair
The Book Fair is on!!! Various classes have had the opportunity to peruse the trolleys looking for that next great read. We are open 8.30am-4pm for the rest of the week. We hope to see you there!
Book Parade
The Book Parade is fast approaching, with many classes I have seen this week sharing their excitement over their costumes. It will take place after morning assembly on Friday in the Quad. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are having trouble securing a book to match your child’s costume. This is one of the most special times of the year. Thank you for all you are doing to help make this a special week for your child/children.
Chess Competition
Last Thursday 17th August, Andrew Pham, Charlie Lenarduzzi, Thien Vu and Max Pedregoza represented Rosary at the ACT Junior Open Chess League Final Competition at Trinity Christian School in Wanniassa. These four students played seven impressive games over the course of the day and placed 10th overall. Well done, boys!
Regards,
Jodie Dawson

Parent Year-Level WhatsApp Groups
The parent WhatsApp groups at Rosary have been a great success since their introduction in 2020. A parent WhatsApp group exists for each year-level at the school. These WhatsApp groups operate on an annual basis, with a new year-level WhatsApp group established at the start of each school year.
The Rosary Community Council endorses the use of WhatsApp amongst the parent groups to promote open communication, positive health and wellbeing, lift spirits, share strategies, have a laugh or two, and to generally support each other.
If you are not currently a member of your child’s year-level WhatsApp group and wish to join, you can join via the link in the Compass Portal. This can be found under ‘My News’ (or ‘Latest News’), titled ‘Year X parent group – Class Contact and Parent WhatsApp Group Information’.
By agreeing to join the WhatsApp group, parents are agreeing to be respectful towards everyone in the group. To ensure the safe and proper use of WhatsApp within the school community, please find below a reminder of the guidelines that group members should adhere to:
- It is encouraged that parents include their name in their WhatsApp profile.
- Be respectful and courteous.
- Respect people’s opinions - no judgement.
- Rude or offensive members will be blocked.
- No complaints regarding the school or teachers. Any complaints must be communicated through official school channels such as the teacher or Principal.
- Do not share or forward the “Invite to Group” link.
- Respect each other’s privacy. Do not forward or share any post or photo which has been shared within the Group.
- Be circumspect in what you post or share. Remember that once you post, you lose control of whatever it is that you post.
Should you have any queries, please contact the Rosary Community Council: rosarycouncil@gmail.com.
Whole Day Absences via Parent Portal
Whole Day Absences
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence. There is no need to adjust times for whole day absences.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
