Principals Report Week 8 Term 3
Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome to Week 8. Term 3 continues to be action packed with so many events and learning opportunities.
Year of the Holy Spirit - August 2023 -August 2024
Recently Archbishop Christopher Prowse announced “The Year of the Holy Spirit” in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. His Grace said “his hope is that the Risen Lord Jesus will continue to shower the Holy Spirit upon us afresh in our time and place.” May the Lord say to us in mercy: “Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, you have great faith”. Let us pray for deeper faith by consecrating this upcoming year to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and Mary’s intercession.
A special prayer card will come home this week for each family this week to acknowledge this important focus.
Welcome back to Ms Janet Hanratty (Kinder Paris)
This week Ms Hanratty starts her role teaching Kinder Paris until the end of 2023. Mrs Hinds is on maternity leave during this time.Mrs Hanratty has been on staff for many years and it's great she can step into this role with so much experience.
Lovely Kinder Liturgy Last Thursday
Last Thursday the Kinder students participated in a lovely liturgy with Fr Mannes. The liturgy was held in the classrooms which made the gathering more intimate. Fr Mannes was able to talk with the students closely and students were able to participate in parts of the liturgy.
New Spelling Mastery Program Begins in Years 3 -6 this week
This week Rosary staff will begin implementing a new spelling program for students in Years 3 Year 6. The SRA Spelling Mastery Program builds dependable spelling skills for students through a highly structured method that blends the following approaches:
- Phonemic approach - helps beginning spellers learn the relationships between spoken sounds and written letters and then apply them to spelling
- Morphemic approach - exposes advanced spellers to prefixes, bases, and suffixes
- Whole-word approach - gives spellers at all levels the meaning and root of a word and shows how the word's spelling is influenced
Spelling Mastery interweaves these three approaches according to students' skill development and provides straightforward lessons to help efficiently and effectively teach the spelling skills students need to become proficient readers and writers. Explicit instruction, careful selection of spelling words, and repeated and cumulative practice help students master each concept and reinforce and retain key information.
The program is designed to ideally be taught daily for approximately 20 minutes and will take place prior to lunch each day, for all groups at the same time. Each teacher in Year 3-6 will take a group (not their normal class group), along with some additional staff. Students have been screened for their spelling level and there will be 10 ‘streamed’ groups where the teaching will be targeted at each student's level so they can improve their understanding of spelling rules and strategies and take them to the next level. The program is designed to introduce new content daily but also revise prior knowledge to work towards mastery. The learning sequence is 4 lessons of content then the fifth lesson is focussed on assessment. Spelling is an important skill and a crucial part of the English curriculum so we are pleased to be starting this new program. There is a letter with more information expected to be shared with parents and carers shortly.

These students finished in a place - from either 1st to 4th in each event. Congratulations to these students. I would like to thank Mrs Elizabeth Fryar and Mrs Diandra Arbarquez for taking our squad to the carnival.

Council met last Wednesday evening and had a full agenda. We received our normal reports from the Principal, Teachers, Fundraising etc and discussed a number of items pertaining to those. We were interested to hear more about the Spelling Mastery Program for Years 3-6 and recent CE visits for accessibility auditing and risk assessments. A visit regarding the School Masterplan is scheduled for this week.
Council accepted two new members at the meeting Matthew Rudd and Fiona Slater. We welcome them the group and look forward to their contributions.
The 60th Birthday celebrations for the year will continue with the Cocktail Party of 4 November. This will be a great social event and a fun evening reminiscing over the last 60 years of our school community. We expect there will be a range of attendees from the past. Please pass on the word and information to friends and families you know who have been associated with our school over the years.
We also viewed the concept grounds masterplan documents. Exciting to see this getting closer. The documents will be reviewed and discussed by the teaching staff and then circulated to the school community very soon for comment.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 17 October 2023.
Father's Day Stall - Thank You
Thank you to everyone who donated items for our Father’s Day stall last Friday. There was a great selection of items and we trust our Rosary Father’s enjoyed their carefully chosen gifts.
Special thanks to Jacinta McDonald and the Year 4 parents for their efforts organising and running the stall.
