Principals Report Week 3 Term 4
Dear Parents and Carers
Sacrament of Reconciliation
This weekend on Saturday 28 October, some of our Year 3 students will celebrate their Sacrament of Reconciliation at our Blackfriars Parish Church. We wish our candidates and families good luck as the students receive this very special sacrament and deepen their love for God and other people through the process of forgiveness and penance. In the presence of Jesus and their families they will continue to feel God’s unconditional love for them and to be one with Him.
Rosary 60th Anniversary Cocktail Party just a week away!
Don’t miss this wonderful celebration. It is a great way for our current community to gather and celebrate along with some past friends, colleagues and students. Tickets are still available for purchase this week.

Catholic Mission Week 2023
The Catholic Mission Month theme for 2023 is "Hearts on Fire, Feet on the Move"
Inspired by the Pope's message for World Mission Sunday, this year Catholic Mission is raising awareness of the life-giving work of lay and religious missionaries around the world with the theme "Hearts on Fire, Feet on the Move".
Throughout 2023, Catholic Mission aims to encourage everyone to engage in both a physical and spiritual journey, to share the message of love and hope not only through their words, but also through their actions.
In his message, Pope Francis reflects on the resilience that everyday missionaries demonstrate in their life-giving work and the burning passion for God and people that inspires their hearts. Dedicating their lives to others, in partnership with communities, missionaries aim to create a positive change through spiritual care and the implementation of grassroots projects, such as healthcare and education, reaching far beyond Catholic communities.
This year, Catholic Mission invites you to journey with us and discover how, together in Mission, we can make a difference in the world. The country that will benefit most from money raised this year is Timor-Leste.
“Everywhere we can make something, small things but we can do what God wants from us. So this is my message. We here. You in Australia. Everywhere. But together we can reach a Kingdom of God.” Says Sr Alma, a missionary dedicating her life to the people of Timor-Leste.
Rosary students and families are raising money this week to help this cause. On Friday they will have a crazy sock day to remind everyone we are involved and committed to helping others through our mission work.
ACT Future of Education Ideas Summit
I was privileged to be invited to attend the ACT Future of Education Ideas Summit at the University of Canberra last Friday. The summit was organised by the ACT Department of Education but included representatives from all 3 school sectors of education in Canberra, as well as universities, First Nations people, allied health organisations, cultural groups, union groups and government. One of the main focus areas of the summit was STUDENT VOICE with the aim to hear from young people in the ACT, students in our schools. Many students from primary schools, high schools and colleges were present to speak and collaborate with adults. A panel of students discussed what school means to them and what environment and factors do they need to succeed at school. They were also asked what they think schools of the future should look like.
When I get the chance I will share some of the insights from the day with you and some of the collaboration points for informing the strategy of future schools in the ACT.
Past Rosary Principals and Staff Visit
On Thursday last week we had a special visit from some past staff to promote the upcoming 60th Anniversary Cocktail Party. It was a trip down memory lane and some great stories were shared. Our remaining lay principals were in attendance, except Mrs van der Sanden who is away from Canberra and Mrs Anne Merner who is sadly deceased.
In attendance were Mrs Meg Clarke, Mrs Moira Sutch, Mrs Maureen Dozspot, and Mrs Anne Moore (the first ever Rosary school secretary who held this role for over 25 years).
It was a great chance to hear them talk about the history of Rosary School and their pride in how strong the school remains today. They were so impressed with the current students they met and spoke with in their time at school on Thursday.
Out of interest, here are the details that I found about the history of Rosary principals.
Sr Joseph Mary 1963-1964 (Founding Principal)
Sr Louise Welbourne 1965-1969
Sr Mary Gonsalvo 1970-1974
Sr Patricia Murphy 1973-1975 (some overlap with previous principal noted here)
Sr Kath Maher 1976-1977
Sr Mary Rafferty 1978-1984
(End of our Religious Order of Preachers Sisters in Principal roles)
Meg Clark 1985-1995 (first lay principal)
Moira Sutch 1996-2001
Anne Merner (deceased) 2002-2006
Maureen Dozspot 2007-2016
Vicky van der Sanden 2017-2021

Rosary Students Participate in Soccer Gala Days
This week we have students participating in soccer gala days on the northside. We have one team competing in the Year 3 and Year 4 competition and two teams competing in the Year 5 and Year 6 competition. The players chosen are current soccer players with experience, which is a great chance for them to represent Rosary School. Thank you to our Sports Coordinator Mrs Elizabeth Frryar for organising the teams and the supervision. Thank you also to the parents assisting with each of the teams.
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.
God Bless

Principal
October is the time of year when Catholic schools are asked to raise funds to help support the work of Catholic Mission. The funds raised help Catholic Mission provide support and advocacy for people in need all around the world. This year, the focus is to support families in Timor-Leste facing health and wellness challenges by providing vital medicines and health support. https://www.socktober.org.au/about
All students are invited to wear crazy or odd socks (with their regular Friday uniform) to school on FRIDAY and bring a GOLD COIN (or more) DONATION to help support the work of Catholic Mission.
I acknowledge that this annual fundraiser is happening at the same time as the BIG Challenge. Usually, these fundraisers occur at different times of the year. Unfortunately, this year, due extenuating circumstances, the BIG Challenge has been moved to Term 4. Thank you for your understanding.

On Friday 17 November 2023 the students will participate in a series of challenges (e.g. skipping, relay racing, aerobics, goal shooting etc) throughout the morning in order to earn their sponsorship donations. All students are encouraged to seek sponsorship via the sponsorship card.
Sponsorship Cards
- Sponsorship donations are sought for participating in the challenge.
- Please secure cash donations in the plastic zip-lock bag and write the sponsor’s name and amount.
- An online payment is available and is preferred. If using the Qkr! option, enter Childs Name and Class as the reference. Once you have made the payment, please also write the amount donated on this card in the Qkr!
- Please return the sponsorship card each Thursday to help the students achieve their weekly incentive.
Hints for students when asking for sponsorship:
- If your family chooses to ask friends/work colleagues/neighbours, always have an adult accompany you.
- Remember to be polite and explain that you are participating in The BIG Challenge at school as an alternative fundraiser to our annual Walkathon/Fete.
- If the sponsor is using the Qkr! option, enter Childs Name and Class as the reference. Once you have made the payment, please also write the amount donated on this card in the Qkr!

- If we achieve our overall goal of $12,000, students will receive a FUN DAY.
