Principals Report Week 6 Term 4
Dear Parents and Carers
Kindergarten 2024 Orientation
Yesterday we welcomed our 2024 cohort of Kindergarten students and parents/carers. It was a lovely morning and a great opportunity for the children to play together and spend some time in our Kindergarten classrooms. We also held an information session in the library for the parents and carers to continue planning for the first day of Kindergarten and beyond.
Our theme for the morning was “We’re Soaring to New Heights!” The possibilities and endless and the future so bright for our newest students who are about to join us and embark on their primary school journey.
Big Challenge Day 2023
This Friday 17 November is our Big Challenge Day! The waiting is over. Students will challenge themselves to complete a number of sporting and physical challenges on the day, in turn raising funds for the school for their efforts. There will also be a sausage sizzle for lunch and the prize giveaway in the afternoon.
If we reach our fundraising target for 2023 we will be selecting one lucky student to be PRINCIPAL for a day and I will swap roles and be a STUDENT for a day! This will not occur this Friday but will happen at a later date if we reach our fundraising target!
Withdrawal of the Order of Preachers and Dominican Religious Presence in Canberra
As mentioned earlier in the year, after 60 years of service and commitment to the Watson and Canberra community, the Order of Preachers fathers and Dominican Religious Presence, will cease at the end of this month. The number of people taking up a life of vocation to serve God and the Church has dropped over the years and the religious fathers and sisters are to be consolidated and are called to serve in other Australian communities now.
Rosary Primary School, Blackfriars Parish and the Australian Catholic University are so grateful for the wonderful legacy we have that has been built over their 60 years here and it is now our role to be stewards of our faith and carry on the Dominican spirit and values in Rosary School and local community.
We look forward to thanking and farewelling our parish priest Fr Mannes Tellis over the next 3 weeks.
- Fr Mannes will celebrate his last mass as our parish priest at the 10.00am mass on Sunday 26 November 2023, followed by morning tea with parishioners.
- Archbishop Christopher Prowse will lead a celebration of thanks on behalf of the archdiocese at the 10.00am mass on Sunday 3 December 2023. At this time, Archbishop Prowse will also welcome our new priests in North Canberra from the Blessed Sacrament Fathers.
- We also hope to farewell Fr Mannes with the school students at a special time to be confirmed in the next three weeks.
Thank you to Fr Mannes for his great service and contribution to our school and the parish in recent years. You will be missed. Below are photos of Fr Mannes celebrating our Kindergarten Liturgy recently.
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.
God Bless

Principal

The format of the school swimming program has changed. Students will attend 5 x 1 hour lessons over the period of a week (Instead of 10 x ½ lessons over 2 weeks).
This change is necessary due to timetabling requirements of the bus company and the Gungahlin Leisure Centre. There will be no change to the price of the program.
Lessons commence on Monday 4 December – Friday 8 December.
More information regarding exact lesson times will be available during week 8.
Kind regards,
Julie Godfrey

Rosary Primary School Grounds Masterplan
The Rosary School Council has been working on finalising the school ground masterplan. The master plan is a combination of ideas from our students, families, teachers, OSH Club and community. The Council, along with school staff, will work through implementation of the plan over the next few years. The first changes you will see around our school will be a new irrigation system and seeding of the school oval to improve the playing surface and maintain it to a high standard. Next you will see the new trees planted as part of the 60 trees for 60 years at Rosary celebrations. Get in now to purchase your tree - these can be purchased via QKR!
New gates will be installed on the Higinbotham St school fence to allow for easier access to the school oval and Gold Leaf Tree Services will generously be delivering nature play equipment for the 2024 school year. Thanks to James at Gold Leaf Tree Services.
The Council looks forward to delivering the school grounds masterplan and would like to thank the Rosary School community for their time and generosity in developing and implementing the first stages of the plan.
The Rosary Community Council is now calling on nominations for 2024 Class Contacts. Class Contacts are an integral part of the Rosary School Community, and the Council greatly appreciates all parent volunteers. Please see the flyer and click on the nomination link
Hayfever season has arrived with the weather being particularly windy and the pollen count high. We have had many children coming to the front office with hayfever symptoms. If your child is prone to hayfever please consider the treatment you would like them to receive.
If you would like your child to be given hayfever medication please fill in a Request to Dispense Medication Form and provide the medication to be stored in the First Aid area.
Parents will be contacted prior to any medication being administered. If your child is a suffers symptoms frequently, you may like to consider treating them before they attend school.
The Request to Dispense Medication Form can be accessed via this link: Request to Dispense Medication and on the school website.

Whole Day Absences
If your child is absent from school for a whole day or longer, please submit details of the absence via the Parent Portal. This should be completed within 7 days of the absence. There is no need to adjust times for whole day absences.
If your child will only be absent for a partial day, the absence will be recorded as your child is signed in or out via the kiosk at the front office. You do not need to add an early pick up or late drop off via the Parent Portal.
Unexplained absences for your child will be displayed on your homepage when you log in to Parent Portal.
If an unexplained absence appears that you believe to be incorrect, please send an email to the front office for investigation.
The school counsellor, is available every Thursday and Friday.
You can refer your child for counselling by contacting the school by phone or email.
You will be asked for your consent for your child to access the service. In the case of families where parents are separated, consent of both parents is normally required. If this is difficult for you please feel free to discuss this with the counsellor.

Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who maintain the space for our community.
