Principals Report Week 2 Term 2
Dear Parents and Carers
Happy Mother’s Day
Happy Mother’s Day to all of our wonderful parents and carers associated with the Rosary Community. Thank you for the role you play in the lives of our students and families. We hope that you know you are loved and appreciated and we wish you a very special day on Sunday and everyday. Below is a little poem for you:
Since the day I was small
Till the day I became tall
Since I began understanding things
Till the day I got my own wings
Your love has never fallen short
You have been my special support
I want to hold you tight and hug you
I just want to say thank you.
—Unveil Talks by Sumiran Mishra and Saakshi Khattri
We also have our Mother’s Day Gift Stall tomorrow morning (Friday) where students can buy a gift for their mum or carers. Thank you to our Year 2 parents and carers for organising the event and the gifts. We hope that each mum receives a special ‘secret’ gift from the stall.
2025 Catholic Education Enrolment Period Now Open
It is now time for families to enrol their children in Catholic Schools for 2025. This includes our Early Learning Centres, Primary Schools and Secondary Schools. The enrolment period is open from Monday 6 May to Friday 31 May.
Our first enrolment open session on Thursday this week was well attended, with a number of families and prospective students attending and having a tour of the school.
Upcoming Rosary Open Days:
Monday 13 May - 9.30am - 11.00am
Tuesday 21 May 3.30pm - 5.00pm
Thursday 23 May - 9.30am - 11.00am
Wednesday 29 May 9.30am - 11.00am
Please share the word that enrolments are open for Rosary School for 2025, with a strong focus on Kindergarten. There are a series of open sessions where prospective parents and their children can attend Rosary for a tour and more information.
Winter Uniforms Compulsory from next Monday - Week 3.
Just a reminder that the transition period from summer to winter uniforms ends this Friday and all students are required to be in full winter school uniform from Monday 13 May (Week 3).
Please also remind your child that they must wear all black dress shoes with their formal winter uniform 3 days per week. They are not to wear black sports shoes on these days.
They have a choice which sports they wear on sports days.
Rosary Cross Country Carnival next Monday
Good luck to all students participating in the school Cross Country Carnival at Dickson Playing Fields on Monday 13 May. The students have been doing a few practice runs to get their stamina up! This is one sport that does test your endurance and resilience.
8.30am - Student Supervision Begins at Rosary
You are reminded again that student supervision starts at Rosary School at 8.30am where the teachers in the quad area will be on duty until 9.00am. You may be aware from previous newsletter articles that the school has an issue with students arriving too early for school. Students have been arriving anytime from 8.00am onwards.
There is a duty of care issue for all students who arrive at school prior to 8.30am.
With the other responsibilities and tasks staff are required to do we cannot supervise or ensure the safety of students prior to 8.30am.
I am concerned that some parents may not even be aware that their children are leaving home early (walking, bikes, scooters) and arriving at school too early.
Students arriving at school before 8.30am have been spoken to by executive staff and asked to not be here early. The main school car park gates on Higginbotham Street will now remain closed in the morning and be opened just prior to supervision beginning. Thank you for your support.
You are reminded that our OSHClub service in the school hall can provide morning care for parents and carers required to travel to work or start work earlier in the mornings.
Year 5 Camp Success
Congratulations to our Year 5 students and staff on a successful camp to Jindabyne this week. From all reports the students enjoyed the sport and recreational activities and night games activities. This is their first school camp and a wonderful way to develop independence, resilience and teamwork. Thank you to Mrs Mogan, Mr Read, Mrs Fryar and Mrs Godfrey for attending camp with the students.
New Basketball Rings Installed
In the school holidays two new basketball rings were installed to replace the old rings and poles. They have served the school well but it is great to have brand new basketball facilities. There has already been a spike in interest in basketball and the court is being used.
Rosary Student competing in Global Competition
Congratulations to Emma Woodhouse in Year 6 who will be travelling to Hawaii to compete in the Global Dance & Cheer Games, representing Sirens Cheerleaders and the ACT on Monday 13 may 2024.
The competing teams will be putting on a Showcase on Sunday 12th May, in order to perform their routines one more time before travelling to the competition. They would love to have a big audience to support them! It's a great chance to see what Cheer is all about as a sport too! If you are free from about 1.45-2.30pm on Sunday, please come along to Sirens Cheerleaders (1/19 Dacre Street, Mitchell) to support Emma and her fellow athletes.
We wish Emma all the very best at the Global Games!
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.
God Bless.

Safeguarding our students
Did you know that Catholic Education and our school has a Child Safe Policy which outlines our approach to child safety? This can be accessed on the Catholic Education Safeguarding Page. We encourage you to visit this page and review our policy. As part of our approach to child safety, Julie Godfrey is also our schools Child Safe Advocate who works closely with our school regarding our approach and response to child safety matters. This approach involves proactive strategies to safeguard our students as well as responding to areas of concerns. The area of child safety includes many parts of a school’s operation such as day to day activities, school events and school camps. We encourage you to contact us should you like to discuss this further.
Walk Safely to School Day - Friday 10th May 2024
Walk Safely to School Day
Friday 10th May 2024
WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 10 MAY 2024
It’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking!
Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:
- Walking with them the whole way to school
- If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
- If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.
Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so bring your legs and meet us at the Watson shops, ready for an 8:30am departure.
(All students who walk to school will receive a free tatoo!)

- Friday 21 June 2024 - Catch Up Portrait Day
The School Counsellor is at Rosary all day Mondays and Tuesdays during each school term.
How to make an appointment
If your child was seen by the School Counsellor last year and you would like them to receive support in 2023, we require you to complete a new counselling registration form. Please either contact your child’s class teacher or Greg Walker- the Principal for further information.
Similarly, new referrals and requests can be made by contacting your child’s class teacher or Greg Walker- the Principal for further information.
Parent consent for counselling continues to be required for all primary school students and will be sought and provided via email. Where parents are separated, we require the written consent of both parents. Once the referral has been received by myself- School Counsellor- I will make contact with parents on my next day at Rosary to further discuss the referral.
More about School counselling/how to access school counselling at Rosary Primary School
As part of the pastoral care program for students at Rosary, students have access to a Student and Family Counselling service provided by MaryMeadCatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn (MCCG). MCCG are contracted by the CEO to provide a counselling service to students and their families on site. There is no fee to access this service. The service offers short term counselling support (roughly up to six sessions per referral issue) to children and their families – the counsellor can also provide referrals for more complex issues requiring intensive or long term therapy/support.
The role of the counsellor is to focus on the emotional, social and educational well-being of the students. Counsellors welcome contact with students having difficulty with some part of their life, the problem does not have to be a big one. It is better to seek help sooner rather than later. Some typical
concerns that counsellors work with include: anger, anxiety, behavioural problems, low mood, family changes/separation, grief and loss, learning and educational challenges, parenting challenges, peer and other social relationships, school avoidance, stress and study skills. As well as individual sessions with students, counsellors can run groups, consult with parents and teachers and make referrals to other services and supports.
Student and Family Counsellors subscribe to a set of professional ethics that include duty of care and respect for the individual rights to privacy and confidentiality. The counsellors’ obligation is to ensure the safety, well-being and confidentiality of the student they are working with. All counsellors are mandated to report any disclosure or sign of abuse (including self-harm) or neglect to Child Protection Services. Outside of our mandated requirements, all counselling sessions are confidential and the details will not be discussed with other parties unless written consent is given by the client.
Sarah Foley- is onsite at Rosary Mondays and Tuesdays during term.
Cold and Flu season is now upon us. To assist in preventing the spread of illness, we seek your co-operation keeping children at home if they are unwell and regularly reminding children about basic hygiene practices including:
Hand Hygiene: frequent washing of hands with soap and water. Using hand sanitizer where apporpriate.
Coughing/Sneezing Etiquette: covering of the mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, disposing of the tissue in the bin and washing hands. Alternatively, coughing into the elbow.
We thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

Students from Rosary attended and participated at the Brumbies game on Saturday.
In rainy conditions they formed a guard of honour for the Brumbies and Fijian Drua teams as they ran out onto the field. Then played a great half-time mini-match against Gungahlin. The two Rosary teams rotated so everyone got a run.
Mrs Fryar popped by and the kids were thrilled to see her.
Some of the children stayed behind with their families and met the Brumbies players.
