Principals Report Week 2 Term 4
Dear Parents and Friends,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! What a fantastic day it turned out to be last Saturday for the Catholic Schools Netball Carnival. Apart from the wind, which was the one thing out of our control, it was a beautiful day. All the teams enjoyed their games and many representatives from other schools commended Rosary on the excellent organisation of the day. Everything ran smoothly and the students enjoyed their games, the company of friends, the support of families and the goodies on offer. I extend enormous thanks to the Rosary community – teachers and parents for the huge effort that went into making the day a success. I especially thank Mrs Godfrey and Miss Garrett for leading the organisation of the carnival. They took on this huge task without hesitation and led with enthusiasm, and a calm, organised approach that made everyone feel highly supported. I also especially thank the parents who took a lead role on committees: Jo Hon, Justine Tansley, Felicity Tonkin, Leann Palmer, Vess Crook, Kirsty Saunderson (and daughter Kasey), Nicole Arndt, Kellie Olsen, Maree and Gavin Harman, Tony Arthur, Tanella Lane, Fiona Hill-Stein, Amber Daverin-Kenna and Stephen Flynn. Heartfelt thanks also go out to the many, many parents and family members who helped out on the day and to the teachers who supported in a myriad of ways in the lead up and on the day. A special mention to Merici College – thank you so much for helping to fill our volunteer roster with your generous commitment of time on the day.
At this point, I am not in a position to let you know just how we went in terms of fundraising as there are still some outstanding accounts to be settled. I am hoping to have the final tally within the next week or so. Thanks again to everyone who contributed in some way – without you, this carnival would not have been the wonderful success that it was. Blessings upon you all.
Emergency Lunches
We continue to experience a high number of students coming to the front office for snacks and lunches when they have left their lunchboxes at home or are hungry because they haven’t had enough to eat. Please ensure that your child has plenty of healthy food choices in their lunch box to get them through the day and check that the lunchbox is actually in the school bag. Should a child present without recess or lunch, the canteen will now provide a simple sandwich, popcorn or rice crackers as the only options provided and parents will be billed accordingly. Students will not be given money to go to the canteen to purchase other items in the case of an ‘emergency’ lunch.
Next Level Writing Competition
Students in Year 5 and 6 who were ready to push themselves, entered the Next Level Writing Competition last term. The competition was an opportunity to become a published author and for their work to be shared with other schools in Canberra.
The short stories had to be no more than 600 words long and had to incorporate the stimulus - an image of two flying dragons soaring over the clouds.
Congratulations to our school winners:
Year Five - Elizabeth Goldsworthy, Anthony (AJ) Rakic and Tearia Teaiwa-Mortimer
Year Six - Eva Spoljaric, Jacinta Ffrench and Kiera Liso
A big thank you to Mr Timothy Stephens from St Joseph's School in O'Connor, for organising this wonderful inter-school competition.
An author in our midst
Whilst we are on the subject of writing …. Mrs Cassie Roberts, one of our wonderful parents, is the author of a brand new children’s book titled: A Day at the Zoo. Cassie has written a delightful rhyming tale that includes characters named after her two children, William and Rose, who are both students at Rosary. The book has also been beautifully illustrated by Cassie’s mother, Judy Richards, The message of the story is that it’s good to try new things, even if it can be a bit scary or daunting at times. It’s about ‘never giving up and always being brave’. Cassie has very kindly donated a copy to the school library and to the children’s classrooms. I’m sure our students will love the book and I hope it will inspire them to be courageous and encourage a love of reading and writing too!
Mission Mass
Yesterday, Mrs Higgins, Mrs Fryar, Mr O’Brien and I accompanied the Year 6 students to the Archdiocesan Mission Mass held in St Christopher’s Cathedral in Manuka. The students certainly did us proud in terms of their behaviour and participation. This year, we had a special part to play in setting the focus and the students both read and placed symbols with great reverence at the beginning of the Mass. It was a pleasure to accompany the students on this special occasion as we learned more about the plight of those in Ghana and the work of Catholic Mission in providing assistance to Sr Stan and her team as they care for children born with disabilities and raise orphan babies. The efforts that we make, as Catholic schools across the Archdiocese, to raise funds to support these good works will make a big difference….and, of course, we can always pray.
Boorowa Carnival
I trust that all our students competing in the Boorowa Netball and Touch Carnival will have a wonderful day tomorrow. Thank you to the many parents who are assisting in a variety of ways. We could not manage without your help. Thank you to Miss Nolan, Mr O’Brien and Mrs Hinds for organising this event and the teachers attending for providing supervision. I’m sure everyone will return very tired after a very full day of activity!
Thought for the Week:

Day of Many Colours Fundraiser

World Mission Mass - thank you!
Our Year 6 Leaders joined with other students from across the archdiocese at St Christopher’s Cathedral to acknowledge and pray for the work of Catholic Mission yesterday. The Mass was beautiful and the students represented our school brilliantly!

Maker Days- Term 4
In term 4 we will run Maker Days in our Makerspace Invention Lab from weeks 1-6 (on Thursdays). Children are welcome to participate in any of the following activities:
- Video game creation on Scratch
- Cardboard and recycled materials creation
- Items made from combination of string/wool creations (can be a mixture of knitting, pom poms, plaits, and any other string creation)
- Student suggestions approved by teacher
Children will be expected to submit a design to outline their idea and this can be edited/added to as the process goes along. They should have some idea of what they are aiming to make before they start, not just make it up as they go.
Children from Kindergarten to Year 6 are welcome, but will be asked to register interest in Week 1 so that we have an idea of numbers.
The first week will be for design only, and weeks 2-6 will be for creating. Children may work independently or in groups.
I look forward to seeing many creative designs and creations.
Mrs Watson
Joelle from Year 6 Cairo was busy competing in the Brindabella Eisteddfod over the holidays and for one of her solo’s, the Classical (which she only learnt in the month prior) she was awarded with a 4th place medal.
She danced with such grace and respect for the music selected for her. She also competed in solo jazz.
She competed the day earlier with her solo contemporary and lyrical dances, also the entire weekend competing in the troupes for her ballet school.
This is the beginning of a wonderful future for Joelle! Well done!
Isobel from Year 6 Cairo took two horses, Midnight Brooklyn Charlie Girl and Minuette Evening Solo to the event riding Charlie on the Thursday and Solo on the Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Unfortunately Charlie had to scratch as she was a bit too excited to ride safely. However Solo did great with a 12th on Friday, a 6th on Saturday and a 2nd in the final on the Sunday.
Isobel wore her Black and White in true Rosary spirit.
The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) is currently reviewing school banking programs. ASIC is seeking public feedback. If you would like to contribute please complete their online survey which can be located at: consultation.asic.gov.au/financial-capability/review-school-banking-programs/
The consultation period closes on 31 October 2019.
Hayfever season has arrived with the weather being particularly windy and the pollen count high. We have had many children coming to the front office with hayfever symptoms. If your child is prone to hayfever please consider the treatment you would like them to receive. If you would like your child to be given hayfever medication please fill in a Request to Dispense Medication form and provide the medication to be stored in the sick bay. Parents will be contacted prior to any medication being administered. On particularly windy days you may like to consider treating your child before they attend school.
The Request to Dispense Medication Form can be accessed via this link: Request to Dispense Medication and on the school website.
