Principals Report Week 4 Term 1
Dear Parents and Friends,
As a school community, we will mark the beginning of Lent by attending Mass at 10am on Ash Wednesday next week. Lent is a good time to slow down a little and to reflect on what we are doing to become closer to God. It is a time to consider the needs of others who may not be as fortunate as we are. It is a time to give thanks for the many blessings that we enjoy and to think about how we might share these blessings with others. One way that we can do this is to support Project Compassion. During Lent, each classroom will have a box on the prayer table which is a donation receptacle for Project Compassion. Lent is an excellent time to think about the difference between our ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ and to sacrifice some of the money that might have gone toward achieving a ‘want’ so that someone else may have a ‘need’ fulfilled.
Year 5 and 6 Camps
The Year 5 students left for their camp at Jindabyne yesterday morning and were in great spirits as they prepared to board the bus. We have heard that they are all having a wonderful time enjoying some exciting adventurous activities and we look forward to hearing more about the camp when they return on Friday.
The Year 6 camp at Milson Island was, most unfortunately, cut short by a day as a gastrointestinal virus spread quickly to a number of the children. However, those who were well made the most of the time there and we enjoyed many exciting activities together. The camp instructors were excellent and extremely helpful to our staff. We received feedback from them that they love hosting our school because our students are so respectful. It was noted that they support and encourage each other to do their best and congratulate each other when they push themselves out of their comfort zones – no matter how far. This is just the kind of feedback we love to hear and we are all very proud of the children, not just for the way they engaged with the camp experiences but for the way they coped so well with the illness that affected the group. I extend very special thanks to the teachers who attend the camps for the wonderful job they do in looking after each and every child.
Swimming Carnival
The Swimming Carnival, held at the Dickson Aquatic Centre on Monday, was a resounding success. It was the perfect day in terms of the weather and everyone enjoyed a wonderful day out. I received some feedback from the lifeguards which made me so very proud. The comment included accolades for the carnival organisation as everything ‘went like clockwork’; for the students in terms of their excellent behaviour, participation and responsiveness to requests; for the staff and parents who were there in great numbers and supported the students so positively. The great community spirit of Rosary did not go unnoticed. A very hearty thanks is extended to our parents for giving up time to be there on the day to fulfil a variety of roles, provide wonderful hospitality and cheer the children on. Thanks also to the organising teachers who put in many hours leading up to the day – Mrs Higgins, Mrs Toole, Mrs Godfrey, Mrs Watson and Mrs Nisbet. It was a day to remember!
Gelato Day
Gelato Day was a resounding success with ice-cream smiles everywhere! Thank you so much to the Kinder parents for organising the treats and serving on the day.
Illness
We are currently experiencing a very high number of students having to be sent home due to being sick at school. The gastrointestinal virus is going around Canberra at the moment. Should your child express that they really don’t feel well or show some symptoms in the morning, please keep him/her at home until fully recovered. Please also remind your child about sound hygiene practices in terms of toilet use and washing hands thoroughly afterward. These things will assist us in preventing the virus from spreading further.
Car Park in the mornings
I ask that parents move vehicles from the courts as soon as possible in the mornings so that the space can be used for classes who are conducting sports and fitness sessions. Should you need to stay that little bit longer, please park in the gravel bay alongside the junior classrooms on Higginbotham Street.
Merici College Opening Mass
Two Year 6 Student Leaders were invited to attend the Merici College Opening School Mass with me on Tuesday this week. It was a special occasion as it began the College’s celebrations for its 60th anniversary. Our student representatives, Lucy Kelly and Sebastian Abbondante, were excellent ambassadors for our school and, after the Mass, we enjoyed the company of other guests and some delicious refreshments prepared by the senior hospitality students of the College. If you would like to know more about the 60th Anniversary celebrations planned for this year, please visit www.merici.college or see the poster on display in our school foyer.
Kind regards,
Vicky van der Sanden

Religious Education Co-ordinator
Blessed are you, O Lord our God.
You have made the sun to light the day and the moon and stars to light the night.
Help us walk in your light.
During this season of Lent, renew us through the gift of your Holy Spirit.
Help us grow in faith, hope and love.
During this special time, we remember that Jesus died and rose from the dead,
So that we might be free to love.
Help us to grow to be the people you call us to be … letting go of old habits of selfishness,
Forgiving those who have hurt us, giving quality time to our families,
And spending time in quiet prayer.
Amen.
