Principals Report Week 8 Term 1
Dear Parents and Friends,
Who would have thought that following hot on the heels of the catastrophic bushfires, severe hailstorms and flooding, we would be dealing with a global pandemic? These are such uncertain and confusing times with changing advice seemingly the only constant. I urge parents to conduct your own physical and mental check-ins and ensure that you take the time to look after your own wellbeing so that you can be of the greatest support to your children. I have included an attachment to this newsletter which provides excellent advice, information and links to resources that provide support for family wellbeing.
I thank Rosary’s wonderfully supportive parents for the messages and gestures of support, care and concern for me and for my staff at this difficult time. I am so pleased to share with you that there has not been one criticism but only questions, which are of course very natural and expected in this time of fluctuation. It is such a blessing to be part of this very special community.
At school, we have taken the following infection control measures;
- sanitising of high-touch areas on a daily basis
- installation of automatic soap dispensers in toilets so that students are not touching the dispenser
- cleansing wash, that is gentle on young people’s skin, located in each classroom
- hand sanitiser used in high risk areas
- regular handwashing and explicit teaching of best practice hand washing and coughing/sneezing etiquette
- hygiene advice posters located around the school and in toilet areas
- social distancing as far as is possible within a school environment e.g. separating line-up areas
- limiting access to the school of parents and other community members
- refraining from passing around items in class e.g. crucifix at prayer circle time
- preventing items from the school environment going into households
Learning frameworks are ready to be sent via email today. These have been co-designed by teachers working in stages. Therefore, the stages e.g. K to 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, will look very similar. These frameworks are intended to provide a scaffold for parents who have students at home to keep them actively engaged in meaningful learning for the last two weeks of this term. The frameworks are not interactive between students and teachers at this time and work will not be submitted to teachers for marking or feedback. Teachers will not be in a position to check in with students during the period that these learning frameworks cover.
At school, due to the low number of students attending at present, we are combining classes – still low numbers in each – so that teachers can be released to prepare content for a remote learning model should it be required next term. Students who attend school in person will now complete the same work that is contained within the learning frameworks that students will be using at home.
Student workbooks will remain at school for the following reasons:
- teachers require student workbooks to make their assessments
- limiting the access of parents and others into the school (no personal collection of books)
- the need to prevent items from the school environment entering households
I ask parents to carefully consider the home learning environment and to provide students with an orderly, free from distraction space that is set up with the essentials for learning: pencils, paper, an exercise book for Literacy and Numeracy work, ruler and eraser etc.
I also ask parents to let me know if your household does not have internet access or a device capable of handling online material.
Please be aware that the Sounds-Write Program is not able to be included in the learning framework or the remote learning model at this time. Qualified teachers have required intensive training over a number of days to learn the program and it takes considerable time to become proficient in delivering the methodology. If parents try to teach this at home without the all-important training and deliver it incorrectly, this could do more harm than good. In any case, uploading materials would be in breach of copyright. The program will re-commence when all students are back to school as usual.
We all have to come to terms with the fact that the learning landscape is going to be very different for a while and that outcomes for student learning will be different in a remote learning environment than they would be in a face-to-face classroom context. When all students are back at school and life returns to ‘normal’, we will hit the ‘refresh’ button and re-assess at that point.
Let’s hope that the time comes sooner rather than later. In the meantime, stay well, look after one another, give thanks to God for daily blessings and pray as often as you can.
Wedding postponed
Last week, we excitedly farewelled Ms Nicole Nolan and wished her well as she took leave to be married. However, very sadly, the wedding has had to be postponed due to the current health crisis the world is facing. Therefore, Ms Nolan will return to school with her name unchanged at this time. We look forward to wishing Nicole and Paul all the very best for a wonderful wedding celebration at some point in the future.
Condolences
On behalf of the school community, I express sincere condolences to Mrs Silvia Correia on the passing of her dear Grandmother in South Africa. Mrs Correia feels blessed to have seen her Grandmother during the January school holidays as now, of course, it is not possible to travel even for important family events such as this. I pray blessings on Mrs Correia and her family and pray that ‘Granny’ will rest in the eternal peace of our loving Lord.

Action Tae Kwon-Do Classes Suspended from Monday 23rd March
To all students, parents and families,
I hope that you are well during this unsteady time.
It is with great sadness that as of Monday 23rd March 2020 Action Tae Kwon-Do (Action TKD) will be suspending all classes due to the evolving situation of COVID-19 and the recent government response in relation to indoor sporting venues.
We are not closing our doors permanently we are merely suspending classes until such a time that it is appropriate to re-commence.
Although we know the many physical and psychological benefits that our members gain from attending classes and Action TKD feeling the economic pressures, we value the health and wellbeing of our members first and foremost.
We have considered the option of running classes outside which would adhere to the social distancing and government requirements but believe that this may not be in the best interests of our members and may give the wrong perception of Action TKD’s intentions.
This is no doubt a very difficult situation for all. We encourage all students and families to remain positive and calm. Canberra and indeed Australia has been going through a rocky period recently. Now is the time to stand by each other and the community.
Action TKD will re-commence classes soon and will encourage its members to return to training and get back to normality.
In the interim Action TKD will look to provide classes in an online capacity from tomorrow night (24th March) onwards. Please stay up to date by liking and following our Facebook page.
We look forward to seeing all soon.
