Principals Report Week 1 Term 3
Dear Parents and Friends,
Welcome back to school and the start of Term 3! It was lovely to see all the children back at school looking so smart in their Winter uniforms and wearing big smiles as well. I do hope that you managed to have some special family time during the holidays. We’ve had a very settled start to the term and we welcome the new families – Wong and Morphett – who have just joined us. We hope they will enjoy many happy years of association with Rosary School.
We are still fortunate in the ACT to have no new cases of the coronavirus. However, we cannot afford to be complacent and must continue to adhere to safe physical distancing and hygiene protocols. This term, we are having to be somewhat more strict about certain procedures given the cases of COVID-19 at Bateman's Bay during the holidays and the fact that many Canberrans have visited the south coast over the break.
In light of this, I am requesting that parents:
- drop off students in the morning and leave again as quickly as possible
- wait for students at dismissal time by keeping a 1.5m physical distance between adults, including staff, at all times
- leave as quickly as possible with your children once they have been collected at the end of the day
- do not enter the building unless absolutely necessary
- ask the front office staff to call for your child and wait in the foyer if you need to pick them up during the day and drop them off again at the front office when returning your child to school
- do not send your child to school if they show any symptoms of illness.
At school, we will be maintaining our additional hygiene protocols including thorough hand-washing with soap, using hand sanitiser, continuing to disinfect fixed play equipment after use and cleaning high-touch areas on a daily basis.
Students do not need to physically distance at school but staff and parents do need to physically distance from one another. To make pick up time easier for parents to find their children quickly and to limit the grouping of parents in one location, we are changing the dismissal procedure from Monday next week. Please see the paragraph below which explains it.
The school calendar has been reviewed in light of the increased risk in the community and in line with Catholic Education protocols and advice from the ACT government and health authorities. Unfortunately, this means that we have had to remove most events from the calendar for this term and beyond. We cannot conduct events where large numbers of adults are likely to be present so this affects events such as school assemblies, Grade Masses and Liturgies, the Fathers’ Day Stall, School Disco, the Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival and the like. Some school events will occur but will not be advertised on the calendar as they will be for staff and student attendance only. Hopefully, we will be able to reinstate all of these community-building events next year!
I thank you for your attention to these important matters and for your cooperation in ensuring that our community remains a healthy and safe place for all.
New Dismissal Arrangements
Starting on Monday next week, we will dismiss the students in the afternoon from the same locations in the quad that they assemble at in the mornings before going into class. Teachers will bring out their classes at 3.10pm and have the children sit or stand in their designated area until collected by a parent or guardian. It is anticipated that parents will be able to easily locate their children in the afternoon to be able to then quickly exit the quad. Any student not collected once most of the class has departed, will be asked to wait at the gates with the teacher on duty. We are hoping this arrangement will reduce congestion at the gates and allow parents the opportunity to better physically distance from other adults. I thank you in anticipation for your assistance with this new dismissal procedure.
Parent/Teacher Learning Conversations
We are permitted to conduct face-to-face Parent/Teacher Learning Conversations on Monday and Tuesday of next week. These will be held in the classrooms along the junior corridor. All afternoon sessions will be held in the junior wing whilst any morning sessions will be held in individual classrooms across the school. As we are being very mindful of physical distancing amongst adults and limiting the number of adults in the school at one time, there will be two teachers located in each classroom during the afternoon sessions and parents are asked to arrive just in time for their Learning Conversation and to leave again as soon as the meeting has concluded. If parents need to wait between meetings, it is requested that they do so by spreading out along the corridor space.
Confirmation
Please keep the students who will be making the Sacrament of Confirmation this term in your prayers. The Formation Evening will take place today at 5.30pm in Rosary Church. Due to restrictions, we ask that only one parent of each candidate attend the session and that all adults sit well apart in the pews.
Kinder Enrolment Acceptances Due
Please note that acceptances for enrolment in Kindergarten next year are due in to the front office next Friday.
Absences
Please email the front office or send an SZapp notice if your child is absent from school so that the school is informed as to your child’s whereabouts. A written and signed note, email and SZapp messages are all acceptable forms of notice in terms of meeting legal requirements.
Emergency Contact Details
It is imperative that the front office is informed of parent contact details. Please remember to update us as soon as there is a change as we need to be able to contact parents in the event of an emergency.
Painting in the school holidays
We have been very fortunate, through the funds donated to the Catholic Schools Building Fund, to have had many areas of the school re-painted during the holidays. The colours now match throughout the building and combined with the recent laying of new carpet tiles along the main corridor and in administration spaces courtesy of the same Building Fund, the school certainly does look lovely and fresh!
Condolences
Sincere condolences are extended to the Morphett family on the loss of Trixie’s Poppy Barry who passed away yesterday. Trixie has just joined the school and this is a sad beginning for her but she is comforted knowing that her Poppy is now in heaven with our loving Lord. Please say a prayer for the family as they navigate this difficult time.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION INFORMATION
If your child is baptised Catholic, has received the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, and wishes to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this year, please read the following information.
FAITH FORMATION SESSION
There is an expectation that you attend the Faith Formation Session as part of the preparation to receive this Sacrament. This is on tonight @ 5:30pm. During this session, there will be some theological input as well as information and discussion.
There is a restriction of 100 people allowed to gather at the church; therefore, only the candidate and one parent (or supporting adult) should attend. When at the church you will need to register each name and telephone number in the foyer (this is a government requirement). Please also adhere to the sanitisation and physical distancing guidelines as set out in the foyer of the church.
- If you are unable to attend tonight, please contact Fr Mannes Tellis ph: 6248 5925 to arrange an alternative meeting.

Rosary Rugby 2020 Season Kickoff
The ACTJRU season finally kicked off last weekend, with Rosary fielding teams in the Under 7’s, 8’s and 11’s age groups.
Under 7’s
The under 7s took to the field for their first game in 2020 last Saturday. The team is made up of kindergartens and year 1s. For many players it was their first game and what a game it was!!
George took up all opportunities when presented and was very brave running head on into the opposition. Josh showed full energy and determination. Hamish was very consistent with his energy and showed great support to his team-mates when in need. Ted held his position though out the game and made many tags. Louis is a defensive powerhouse and showed great sportsmanship. Charlotte was fearless and determined amongst her peers.
This was a spectacular first game and we can’t wait to see how the rest of the season plays out.
Well done under 7s!!
Under 8’s
The under 8s had a great start to their 2020 season on a crisp, but pleasant winter morning, with a 7-5 try win against Uni- Norths Owls. The u8s have a newly appointed permanent coach, Tom Haddad, a former Rosary student, Brumbies squad member and first grade player for Gungahlin Eagles. Tom met the team for the first time on Saturday, and did a great job with his new young charges, some of whom are playing their first year of rugby. Rosary fielded a team of 6 players, with 1 additional player on loan from Uni-Norths for each
half. Best player on ground was James Stein, scoring 4 tries, with Liam Cullen and Louis Monahan each scoring a try and Declan (on loan from Uni) scoring a late try to finish off the game. Well done boys, on a fantastic season start, after what has been a challenging and uncertain time. Thanks to parent, James Turner for refereeing the game.
Under 11’s
After a successful 2019 season, Rosary U11s stepped out for the first time to play in the ACTJRU Division 1 competition vs the Gungahlin Eagles. Despite a hesitant start, the team warmed into the game showing an ability to compete in all areas. There was some outstanding individual moments in defence with every player showing they are able to tackle and take on the opposition regardless of their size. There were less opportunities in attack but again many positives with players looking to run into space, draw and pass.
The second half saw some effective positional changes and a very even contest for significant periods of time. With greater overall urgency, a more reactive defensive line and aggression at the breakdown the team will see opportunities to turn over more possession and put points on the board. Whist there is room for improvement, the team showed they are absolutely capable in this Division. The coaches, parents and supporters look forward to the season ahead and the seeing the boys mature as a both individuals and as a team.
