Principals Report Week 2 Term 3
Dear Parents and Friends,
Next Monday is the Feast of St Dominic; patron saint of Rosary School. Usually, we would celebrate with a whole school Mass. However, we are unable to do this with the current restrictions in place regarding numbers in the church. Therefore, there will be a special prayer and activities in classrooms focussed on the saint’s wonderful gifts to the world. In the afternoon, we will gather in vertical groups to unpack the meaning of STRIVE as part of our philosophy of teaching and learning that Together we do our BEST (Believe, Explore, Strive, Triumph).
Thank you to all parents who came along to the Parent/Teacher Learning Conversations and thank you to the teachers for the time put into preparing and holding these conversations. Both evenings ran very smoothly and I thank everyone for following the distancing protocols so beautifully.
Illness
To assist in preventing the spread of illness, and even more importantly at this time of COVID-19, we seek your co-operation in regularly reminding the children about basic hygiene practices including:
Hand Hygiene: frequent washing of hands with soap and water.
Coughing/Sneezing Etiquette: covering of the mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, disposing of the tissue in the bin and washing hands. Alternatively, coughing into the elbow.
The students are not the only ones affected by illness, especially at this time of year. Staff members may also require leave to recover from illness. When a staff member is absent, for whatever reason, we do make every attempt to secure a relief teacher. Sometimes, relief teachers can be in very short supply and it can be difficult to secure a replacement – especially over consecutive days. Relief staff may also be booked elsewhere or experiencing illness themselves which means they are not available to our school. If a relief teacher cannot be found, it becomes necessary to ‘split’ a class. This means that students from the one class are divided in small groups or pairs amongst the remaining classes in the school for the day. In this instance, students take ‘day away’ activities with them and work on these as well as joining in with the class group they are visiting when the activities are suited to their level. As far as possible, the regular teaching program is followed when relief teachers are employed.
Hats on again!
August is ‘hats on again’ time in accordance with our Sun Smart School Policy. From the start of next week (Week 3), students will be expected to wear either the uniform school hat or beanie. Should students not be wearing either of these when outside, they will be directed to play in shaded areas.
Lunch time activities
For the information of parents, there are a number of activities that take place at lunch time across the week that you may like to encourage your child to be involved in. These provide an alternative to outside play:
- The library is open from Monday to Thursday for all grades
- Aero Club takes place in the library on Wednesdays for Years 4, 5 and 6 members who have signed up (membership changes after several weeks with one small group at a time taking part)
- Dance Core is a dance session hosted by an external provider and takes place on Wednesday in the hall. It is open to all grades. (This has a fee attached)
- Karaoke Club is open to all students from Kinder to Year 6 and takes place on Thursdays
- Running Club is open to all students from Year 3 to Year 6 and takes place on Fridays
- The Reconciliation Challenge involves art and writing activities and is open to Years 5 and 6 students on Tuesdays.
Condolences
Please say a prayer for Mrs Silvia Correia and her family. Silvia's mother passed away suddenly on Sunday in South Africa. At this time, it makes it even more of a difficult situation and my heart goes out to Silvia and her family. Silvia lost her father just before starting at Rosary and then her grandmother not long after. I pray for strength and comfort for the family. May Silvia's mother rest forever in the loving arms of our dear Lord.
Prayer of St. Dominic
May God the Father, who made us, bless us.
May God the Son, who redeemed us, send healing into our midst.
May God the Holy Spirit, who gives us life, move within us.
May God give us eyes to see God, ears to hear God, and hands to bring God’s work into the world.
May we walk with God and preach the word of God to all.
May the angel of peace watch over us and lead us at last by God's grace to the eternal Kingdom.
REPEAT NOTICE:
New Dismissal Arrangements
This term, we will dismiss the students in the afternoon from the same locations in the quad that they assemble at in the mornings before going into class. Teachers will bring out their classes at 3.10pm and have the children sit or stand in their designated area until collected by a parent or guardian. It is anticipated that parents will be able to easily locate their children in the afternoon to be able to then quickly exit the quad. Any student not collected once most of the class has departed, will be asked to wait at the gates with the teacher on duty. We are hoping this arrangement will reduce congestion at the gates and allow parents the opportunity to better physically distance from other adults.
Thank you to everyone for making this new arrangement work smoothly to date.

ST DOMINIC’S FEAST DAY - MONDAY
St Dominic’s Feast Day is on this Monday 3 August. Although we will not be celebrating with our usual whole school Mass, students are invited to come dressed in their black and white uniform and will participate in an activity in their classes.
We are proud of our 55-year history and heritage, which stems from the Dominican tradition.
Our Heritage
Our school was founded by the Dominican sisters as a vibrant demonstration school for the Signadou Teachers’ College, now ACU. It was officially opened in 1965 and, although it had been planned for 450 students, by 1969 enrolments reached almost 700. Sister Louise Wellbourne OP was the Principal at this time of rapid growth and development. Sr Louise was the one who came up with the idea to name each class after a city/country from around the world.
Our Name
Our school was originally called Blackfriars Primary but this was changed to Rosary Primary soon after. St Dominic, the founder of the Dominicans is considered to be the originator of the Rosary, hence the name of the school.
Our Crest
The Dominican Crest is full of symbolism and dates back to the early 15th century. Black and white are traditional Dominican colours. The eight divisions represent joy and penance. The Cross of Aza, was the family symbol of St Dominic’s mother. The ends of the cross are in the shape of a flowering lily, representing sacrifice turning into joy. The 8-pointed star represents compass points and is also a symbol of light and divine revelation. Dominicans are committed to bringing the light of truth to the world.
Our Motto
The school’s motto is ‘Veritas’ which means ‘Truth’. This has always been a motto of the Dominicans. In the widest sense ‘Veritas’ means more than just truth. It means honesty with oneself; being one’s own person before God and before others. Honesty brings us closer together, and allows us to build trust-worthy relationships. Jesus says he is the way, the truth and the life. Seeking truth means to seek the way Jesus would have us live. Our school motto expresses what we believe in, and how we try to live.
The whole community is greatly indebted to the Dominican Sisters for their foundational work. We continue to work closely with the Dominican priests who run our Parish and feel privileged to be part of such an historically and spiritually rich community.

Religious Education Coordinator
The school calendar has been reviewed in light of the increased risk in the community and in line with Catholic Education protocols and advice from the ACT government and health authorities. Unfortunately, this means that we have had to remove most events from the calendar for this term and beyond. We cannot conduct events where large numbers of adults are likely to be present so this affects events such as school assemblies, Grade Masses and Liturgies, the Fathers’ Day Stall, School Disco, the Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival and the like. Some school events will occur but will not be advertised on the calendar as they will be for staff and student attendance only. Hopefully, we will be able to reinstate all of these community-building events next year!
I thank you for your attention to these important matters and for your cooperation in ensuring that our community remains a healthy and safe place for all.

Under 7's
After a great start to the season, the U7’s went into game 2 with the same enthusiasm and intensity as they had the week before.
Despite the chilly weather, things were certainly heating up on the field as they faced off against Uni Norths at Nicholls Enclosed.
Pocket rocket Charlotte proved that good things come in small packages, charging through the lads! Josh, Louis & Charlie were a formidable trio of Fullbacks with their height dominating the field, whilst front rowers Ted, George and Hamish ducked and weaved their way to success.
Overall a tremendous game played by all. Onto Yass this weekend!
Under 8’s
Rosary won 50 - 15
The mighty Rosary Eagles U8 team notched up another impressive win on Saturday, defeating a strong Gungahlin side ten tries to three. It was noticeable that in one short week, the Rosary players had improved in many areas, not least of all by improving their defensive skills and maintaining possession at the breakdown. Coach Tom has been working hard with the team on these skills and it showed during the match.
Early on in the game Gungahlin looked likely to push to Rosary to a close result, however, the more the game progressed the better the Rosary team played. Of special note was the way that our players supported each other and kept showing up in the face of some strong attack by Gungahlin.
All players made a great contribution to the team on Saturday, most notably:
- Tomas Spoljaric, James McOughlan and Zane Vella for working hard to be involved in many of the plays and supporting their teammates
- Digby Harman for executing some great kickoffs
- Liam Cullen for making some excellent tackles and working very hard in defense
- Louis Monahan, Bobbie Monahan and James Stein for some great support play, strong runs and for scoring 3, 3 and 4 tries respectively
Well done Rosary U8! We will all look forward to another great match this coming Saturday.
Under 11’s
The Under 11s hosted St Edmunds at Southwell Park on Saturday. The team was looking to improve off an at times promising opening game of the season and the first since being promoted to Division 1. The match started brilliantly for us with two tries in the opening five minutes, both scored by Bryce Stuart, from strong, sustained defence and hard running. From that point on, the match evened up and St Edmunds mounted a comeback and scored several tries. We finished the match strongly and were unlucky not to add to our try tally. Once again, individual tackling was a highlight, but defending as a team let us down at times. The good news is that part of the game is easily fixed with some hard work at training. The match finished with St Edmunds winning 29-12. This was a very good performance, given St Edmunds are a powerhouse of the Division and the fact that we have a lot of improvement in us. All the boys contributed to the performance, with Luke as captain leading the way. Remy controlled the attack and defence and was ably supported by the triplets (Bryce, Cooper and Aiden). Sam and Eddie worked hard and provided some steel in the defence and good work over the ball. Another pleasing aspect is the boys keeness to get out there and the way they are very supportive of their team mates when on the bench. Once again, well done to all the boys. Queanbeyan next week will be another test but with a committed training performance we will be ready.
