Principals Report Week 6 Term 1
Dear Parents and Friends,
This week is Wellbeing Week at school. During this week, we focus on physical and mental good health practices. Students are not given homework tasks and it is a meeting-free week for staff. Staff members are also treated to a special lunch on one of the days. Wellbeing week is a good time to focus on family time and self-care and to spend some time enjoying the wonderful natural world that God created for us.
Hygienic Practices and Sickness
The school is continuing to be vigilant in the current health crisis in terms of sending students home should they present with any cold and flu-like symptoms.
If your child is not well in the morning, please do not send them to school. We are also regularly reminding the students about good hygienic practices, especially thorough hand washing with soap and coughing/sneezing etiquette to help prevent the spread of germs. I ask parents to reinforce these messages at home and to spend time practising thorough hand washing with soap for at least 20 seconds each time and practising how to cough/sneeze to minimise the spread of germs as per the two attached posters.
Please also speak with your child about how to use the toilet properly and to flush, wash hands well, dry hands and then leave the space. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Morning and Afternoon Supervision
Please remember that, for safety reasons, no child should be on the premises before 8.30am at which time supervision commences. If you start work extra early, please arrange to have your child enrolled in the OSHClub before school service or supervised by a family member, friend or neighbour until the start of the school day.
At the end of the school day, a teacher is on duty until 3.30pm in the quad. After this time, any students who have not been collected wait in the front office area but no formal supervision is provided. Please be prompt in picking up your child at the end of the day as teachers often have after school meetings and other work-related commitments to attend.
Sports Equipment from Home
Please ensure that your child does not bring his/her own sports equipment to school – with the exception of the little rubber bouncing balls and tennis balls that are used for playing handball before school. Please ensure these are labelled with your child’s name. The school has a generous supply of sports equipment for the children to use during the breaks. When children bring their own things, it creates problems on the playground with regard to issues of property going missing or being damaged and of ownership/power e.g. ‘I own the ball, therefore I’m the boss of the game’.
Wedding Congratulations
Ms Nicole Nolan will be taking leave next week to get married! We wish Nicole and Paul all the very best for a wonderful wedding celebration and the happiest of futures together. We look forward to welcoming Ms Nolan back to school, after her honeymoon, as Mrs Mogan.
Condolences
I express sincere condolences to the Kelly family on the loss of Grace’s paternal grandmother, Carol Kelly. Grace’s Nannie will be sorely missed and I pray that the family will take comfort from the many wonderful memories they shared with her. May Carol rest now forever in the arms of our loving Lord.
Thought for the week
“Our lives are never measured by how many years we live, but by the kindly things we do and the happiness we give.” Anon.
Project Compassion
Every class has a Project Compassion box for donations.
Please give generously.
The theme of this year’s Project Compassion is ‘BE MORE.’ As Saint Oscar Romero said, “Aspire not to have more, but to be more.”
Every year, countless people turn Lent into a demonstration of faith, love and generosity. You can be a part of this incredible community, who believe that there are simple actions we can all take to “be more” for our world. Taken from: https://lent.caritas.org.au

Protective Behaviours – Body Awareness and Body Ownership
Dear Parents,
As part of the Protective Behaviours program, students will be learning about body awareness and body ownership.
Teach your child that they are the boss of their body. Talk with your child about the names and functions of both the private and public parts of their bodies. As soon as a child is old enough to begin to understand their feelings and name their body parts, they are old enough to have conversations about keeping safe. As they grow older, the protective behaviours conversations become more detailed as appropriate to their age level and understanding.
It is important to use the correct anatomical names for private parts of the body.
Using the correct anatomical names:
- promotes positive body image
- increases self confidence
- improves parent-child communication
- discourages people from touching children inappropriately
- in the possible event of abuse, helps children tell adults what has happened to them.
If anyone ever touches any part of their body and they feel uncomfortable, your child can tell that person to stop, move away (regain their personal safety) and tell someone on their network. These conversations are important and don’t need to be difficult.
Kind regards,
Julie Godfrey

Congratulations to all students who participated in our Swimming Carnival. We were blessed with beautiful weather on the day. Students are to be commended on their sportsmanship and outstanding behaviour. A highlight was to have our Kindergarten and Year 1 students join us for some water play. The Rosary School spirit was in abundance throughout the day. Results have been finalised and ribbons will be presented over the next week.
Students who have progressed to the North Gungahlin Regional Representative Carnival (Monday 29 March) will be informed shortly.
Freeman House won the carnival with 207 points.

Many thanks to Mrs Higgins, Mrs Toole, Mrs Hinds and Mrs Watson for their assistance prior to the day. Also, to Mr Peter Ederle for transporting equipment to and from the pool. Thank you to the many parents who gave up their time to volunteer at the carnival.

Rosary Safe Cycle Bike Program
Students in Years 5 and 6 are fortunate to be able to participate in a Safe Cycle program during Physical Education lessons.
Lessons have been developed to suit primary school students in years 5 and 6. Students in this age group will have diverse skill levels and riding experiences.
Students in this age group are usually becoming independent riders and would mostly be riding on quiet streets and paths. Safe Cycle has been developed with a mix of theory and practical lessons aimed at developing transferable bike handling and hazard negotiating skills through bike play.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Rosary owns a small number of bikes. For the program to be successful we ask students to bring their bikes to school. For some students, this isn’t possible. We are looking to increase our supply of bikes and are asking for donations of secondhand bikes in good condition. Do you have a bike sitting in your garage not being used? We would be very grateful for any donations.
We also need someone to service our bikes once a year. If you are able to assist, please contact the school or email me directly.

THURSDAY 1ST APRIL (Final day of Term 1)
This year Rosary will AGAIN participate in the ACT Government’s Ride or Walk to School program. The program suggests that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking or riding as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking or riding all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking or riding more by:
- Walking or riding with them the whole way to school
- If they get the bus, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
- If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
Regular exercise like walking and riding with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes, it also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.
Please join us on the last day of term by using your legs or wheels to get to school. Remember that helmets must be worn if your child is cycling or riding a scooter.
Some of the staff will be at the Watson shops ready for an 8:30am departure. Parents are welcome to walk with us. This is always a well-attended event and builds school and community spirit. We hope to see many children and parents arriving at school without their car!
Kind regards,
Julie Godfrey
