Principals Report Week 4 Term 2
Dear Parents and Friends,
This coming Sunday is the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus. This feast celebrates Jesus, in his bodily form, being taken to heaven forty days after his resurrection. It implies that because his humanity is accepted into heaven, so too will ours. Many of the images of the Ascension show Jesus stretching out his right arm in blessing to those who remain – meaning all of us; the whole of his church on earth. The invitation is extended. It is up to each of us whether or not to accept the invitation to enter into eternal life with God through the way that we choose to live our lives.
NAPLAN
Students in Years 3 and 5 are sitting the national tests in Literacy and Numeracy skills over this fortnight. Most of the tests are completed online. There were a few nerves at the beginning of the week but these settled quickly as the children were reassured that we only expect their best efforts and not perfection. Please keep in mind that these tests are only one small measure of a student’s or a school’s success and provide a snapshot view of performance by a small percentage of the school’s students on a given day. Whilst NAPLAN results do provide teachers with valuable information, they need to be viewed in context – considering all the factors that come into play with regard to the assessment of the student. NAPLAN is by no means the only form of assessment used by the school to chart student progress and inform planning and programming. NAPLAN results will be released in the coming months and parents will receive a report detailing their child’s achievement against national and school performance levels.
Open Days
Our first Open Day was a great success! Thank you to our current families who helped spread the word as we didn’t have much lead up time to be able to advertise the event yet we had around 20 people come along to have a look at what we have to offer at Rosary. Everyone was most impressed with the school – the facilities, curricular and extra-curricular offerings, clean and well-kept spaces, resources and, most of all, our wonderful students who showed exemplary conduct and impeccable manners to our visitors. All our guests commented on the calm and welcoming feeling throughout the school and there were accolades for our Year 6 Leaders who, without any particular preparation, escorted them on tours and who were so articulate and well-mannered and who showed such pride in their school. They really are our very best advertisement and we are most proud of them.
We are hoping to welcome many more visitors at our next Open Day on 27th May between the hours of 9am and 1pm. We have flyers ready to distribute and would love some help from our families to drop them into letterboxes in the local area. If you are willing and able to help with this, please contact the front office. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Reporting - Semester One 2021
Our teachers have begun the process of creating each child’s Semester One 2021 report.
A team at Catholic Education has been working over the past year to develop our Semester reporting format and there are major and welcome changes being introduced this year which have been applied across the whole system of Catholic primary schools in our Archdiocese.
In Semester One:
For Kindergarten students:
- Achievement in each subject will be reported using a four-point scale (Well Above Expectations, Above Expectations, Meeting Expectations and Working Towards Expectations).
For Year 1 to Year 6 students:
- Academic grades for each subject using a five-point scale from A-E will be reported using the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards.
For all students:
- Strand Achievement will be reported in English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education, and The Arts using a five-point scale (Excellent, High, Sound, Basic, Elementary).
- Engagement with Learning statements, which are taken directly from the Australian Curriculum, will provide specific information about your child’s Critical and Creative Thinking, and Personal and Social Responsibility, using a three-point scale (Beginning, Developing, Consistently).
- Individual student comments will not be used in the Semester One Reports.
Dialogue is an important feature of reporting. At the end of Term 1 we held Parent/Teacher Learning Conversations. The Semester Report, in this new format, encourages the continuation of parent engagement and conversation about student learning. Parents are always welcome to make a time to meet with teachers where we can engage in genuine conversation about your child’s strengths, challenges, effort and areas for growth. We will also invite parents to do this in Week 10 of this term, after the reports have been mailed, should you wish to discuss any aspect of the Semester One Report.
The new approach to Academic Reporting is a developing process. Further work will be undertaken in the coming months to determine how progress and achievement is best reported, based on what we know to be important information about a student’s learning and progress.
Thought for the Week:
“Hand all your troubles over to God…..he’s up all night anyway!”
