Principals Report Week 7 Term 2
Dear Parents and Friends,
This coming weekend, we will celebrate the Sacrament of First Eucharist and we pray for the children receiving Jesus for the first time and for their families who have supported them along the way. Thank you to the whole community for keeping the children in your prayers over the past few weeks. The children will participate in a Retreat Day tomorrow, making final preparations to receive Jesus in this Sacrament. Thank you to Mrs Higgins, Mrs Godfrey, Mrs Dellosa, Mrs Hillsdon and Mr O’Brien for teaching and preparing the students – those receiving the Sacrament and those who have been supporting their classmates on this journey. Thank you also to the teachers and students from all other classes who have been praying for the students and who have prepared special gifts for them. This year, due to restrictions on numbers still in place for closed spaces, the Communicants and their families have been asked to attend one of the regular weekend Parish Masses at which they will receive the Sacrament for the first time. I wish the students all God’s blessings on this very special, landmark occasion in their spiritual lives.
Rostrum Congratulations
Congratulations to Sarah Rogic who is the winner of our school level competition in Rostrum Public Speaking. Sarah did an excellent job of presenting on the topic “A better way”. Congratulations to the other students who also presented excellent speeches on a variety of topics: Kiersten Bolanos, Adelaide Davis, Serena Tran, Seraphine Parker, Alexandria Arndt and Mitchell Power. The three judges had a very difficult time deciding on a winner to continue to the next level and represent the school at the quarter-final as all the entrants presented with such confidence and composure. Seraphine Parker was awarded status of runner-up and will represent the school should Sarah not be able to attend the quarter-final. Well done to all the school finalists. We are very proud of you!
Awards
Rosary Primary School recognises that students thrive by being rewarded when they have achieved a milestone out of the ordinary or have made progress in a certain element of their learning or have shown exemplary conduct or effort. This recognition may take the following forms:
Veritas Award: One (or more) student in each class is nominated by the class teacher to receive this award, which is distributed on a weekly basis at assembly. Records are kept by the teacher to ensure a reasonably even distribution.
BEST Award: Each term our School Vision is celebrated and awards are given accordingly. Term 1 BELIEVE, Term 2 EXPLORE, Term 3 STRIVE and Term 4 TRIUMPH. These awards are presented fortnightly at an assembly and photos of the students are proudly displayed in the main corridor.
Sporting Awards: Students are awarded for their performances as placegetters in the Rosary / North Canberra and ACT Sports Carnivals.
Other Awards: Students also receive awards for chess, aero club etc as opportunities arise.
Sports Equipment from Home
Please ensure that your child does not bring his/her own sports equipment to school – with the exception of the little rubber bouncing balls that are used for playing handball at school. Please ensure these are labelled with your child’s name. The school has a generous supply of sports equipment for the children to use during the breaks. When children bring their own things, it creates problems on the playground with regard to issues of property going missing or being damaged and of ownership/power e.g. ‘I own the soccer ball, therefore I’m the boss of the game’.
Do you know where your fees go?
It is that time of the term when fees are due and I thought it timely to remind you of how these monies are disbursed:
The Catholic Education Office Tuition Fee is a payment that is made to cover the cost of teacher salaries within the system. Regardless of how much of this fee is received by the school, there is a requirement to remit 80% of the total amount due to the Catholic Education Office.
The Catholic Education Office Building Levy is in fact a tax deductible donation that is used for the maintenance of school buildings in the system (not to build new schools).
The School Resource Fee covers the costs associated with administration of the school e.g. utilities, cleaning supplies, office equipment and grounds works and maintenance. It also includes purchase, upgrade and maintenance of technologies within the school as well as covering some subscriptions for software and licensing. It is also used to cover both visits to the school by third parties offering educational programs and visits by students to venues outside of the school and covers the costs associated with sporting events requiring transport and venue hire.
The Student Resource Fee is spent on text books, stationery, art supplies and all other consumables used by the students as required for their classes.
As you will appreciate, it is very important to the successful operation of the school and the education of the students that fees are paid in full and in a timely manner. However, we do understand that times are particularly challenging at the moment. For any family experiencing genuine financial hardship, the process is to contact the Principal in the first instance. Please be assured that all matters are handled in strict confidence.
